Modded SLI! A budget builders last resort?

Recommended Posts

Posted · Original PosterOP

So i came across a page saying you can use different cards in SLI and i was wondering has anyone in this forum done it ?

I'm very curious on what will happen and if Slick or Linus would ever do on a video about it (with a massive disclaimer of course)

Different SLI [AUTO] - SLI for different cards

Someone Inform me if this would be worth it with a GTX 780 Ti and GTX 780.

If in all I would like to here some opinions on the subject. Personally i think its pretty cool that this is thing that the community have made and could really help for budget builders want to SLI :)

SLI only works with two of the same GPUs. You can have different coolers and PCBs, but you have to have the same actually GPU chip. So no, a 780 Ti and a 780 will not SLI together.

[edit] sounds pretty sketch to me. A driver isn't something I would download if it were modded lol and support DEFINITELY isn't guaranteed either

that sounds like even if it would work i'd be terribly optimized.

I'd imagine the issues that come with 'modded SLI' aren't particularly pleasant. Personally, I'd skip SLI altogether and get a single stronger card.

Without a doubt due to it not being natively support but if you got two cards that worked without many problems it would be amazing for a budget builder. Really tempted in buying some old cards and trying this out...

We know. It sounds like crap lol that's what we're saying. All of SLIs regular problems plus all these new ones that no one can explain

This is the thing I hate with people these days, no one really wants to get into modding or tweaking their gear. People just except if it doesn't work or isn't supported then it stays like that, no one will go out of their way to try and fix something or mod something too work. Of course modding SLI is going to have difficulties but it makes me happy that at least people are trying to get things to work or having fun with modding PC parts.

Why would i waste my time trying to get some "modded SLI" to work at most likely crappy lag, frametimes and whatnot if i could just aswell either get a single more powerfull card or a second card of the one i already have and use real SLI that gets regular updates?

I mean, i see your point in modding but in this case it just doesn't make any functional sense.

I'm all for modding and customization and trying new things. Trust me. I tried overclocking my 5820K to 5GHz on 3 cores only. Didn't work. I put a real pumpkin inside my computer case. I ran a GTX 970 as a physX card with my GTX 1080. Didn't make a difference lol. But that's something I personally wouldn't mess with. Just my opinion
