How often do you upgrade your hardware. a.k.a how often do you purchase new macs.

    • I upgrade whenever Apple comes out with new model. (Cutting edge tech is important to me, also I have the budget, so why not?)

    • Within 3 years. (Mostly I try to use what I have, but sometimes the newer model is hard to resist. I hate impulse purchase but sometimes it feels great to own what you wanna own immediately.)

    • 3-5 years. (Typical electronics life expectancy here.)

    • More than 5 years. (I love my hardware and I treat them with care. My macs can last more than 5 years easily.)

    • No matter how old the machine is, if it works, I will use it. When it dies I throw it away and buy the latest highest end one and make it last as longer as it could. (I am not poor, by any means. But I treat my financial decisions very carefully because every bit counts. )

WOW you are a power user. Mine is only 400 something.

I think it is expected that the battery is gonna last you shorter after that amount of battery cycle. 

Here's one article about the typical battery cycle of every gen macbooks.

Take a look, if I see it right yours should be at 1000.

I'm still using my MacBook on the side for notes and shit.  It still works perfect.

Currently focusing on my video game collection.

It doesn't matter what you play games on, just play good games you enjoy.

I am a software developer, and i mostly do freelancer work, so i travel a lot.

Because i have relations to an Apple that writes Programms for Apple, I get a Macbook Pro 13 inch for around 1200 with a few upgrades. I normally get it with the Apple Care Package, and after 3 years i just sell it for the same price i bought it . I have been doing this 2 time already, and the third one is on its second year.

 

I can easily afford it, so i see no reason, why i shouldn't get the better product.

To be honest i like the apple environment much more for programming than the windows one. MacVim is just so smooth to work on.

 

Anyway, I wil probably switch to an iPhone soon, but my whole music libary , which i ripped from my own CD's is all in Flac, and i am mostly to busy to convert it.

got a 2014 MBPr, still runs great, I mostly use it for financial/work/study/serious work, things like the vault and keychain are pretty usefull including the(according to seller) "hardware locked OS". But I admit, using that thing feels saver compared to my own desktop with win 10 on which I install alot of stuff from both known and unkown sites, so I'm not taking the risk for it.

I have a 2012 Macbook pro 13" and never had any problems with it. Been using it these last 4 years for college. Actually got it really cheap as well (new). It costs €1260 here but I bought it with 20% off during a sale and also got €200 back from college. So a brand new mbp cost me €800. Used prices now are close to what I payed for it 4 years ago. 

 

I have 600 cycles on it, and the battery goes easily through 8hours of classes with about 20% left at the end of the day. I've been really careful with it, I used a case and a sleeve and clean it regularly. Never dropped it and after 4 years, the mbp still looks like new. Also use it a lot at home. I basically do everything on it except for gaming (just build a new pc for that). I updated my mbp to sierra this weekend. It got stuck during the update, but it fixed itself and I didn't lose any data. Felt sluggish after the update, but after a day it works fine. I still need it for 2 years to finish my studies, after that I don't know if I will get a newer model since this one is still in perfect condition.

na you're good. I also have 8GB on my MacBook air. Your swap use is very small.

here is my usage from activity monitor. I think my swap use is higher than yours because i just woke my computer up from suspend. I'm using half my memory with android studio, two different web browsers, and Libre office open. I don't see any reason to get more than 8GB on a MacBook, I'm not expecting any need for an upgrade in the near future, maybe 3 years time and a couple of OS upgrades well need more?

Initially I replaced after 3 years, but now I can't see me needing to for a long time. The hardware will easily last and the parts are more than fast enough for my usage.

Yea, it's been used so much that the battery can no longer hold the charge that it used to.

 

@djdwosk97 is well past his battery cycle limit too.

Oh am I now? 

 

I still get a good 3.5-4 hours with 30~ tabs and a Linux VM running in Virtual Box.

It does not matter whether it is a laptop or All in one or desktop.

 

Also when you upgrade what do you do with your older machine?

Give it away to relatives(children)? Sell it for some cash back? Or throw away the dysfunctional machine and forget about it?

If you do sell your mac, how much money can you get back normally? 20%? 30%??

People said that macs have a higher resell value when compares to PC. Is it true???

My first Mac, a 2007 C2D 15" MBP lasted me until October 2013, at which point it still ran fine, but I really needed more RAM and CPU power for what I was doing (but it still works fine today for basic internet/email/etc...). I replaced it with a rMBP that I expect to keep for another 3 years or so. (so 6~ year upgrade cycle for me)

 

My old Mac is sitting in my closet (with no battery as it died/exploded), I don't have a use for it, nor do I know anyone who has a use for it. 

 

Let's put it this way, I could probably sell my 16gb/256gb 2013 rMBP for $1100~ if I wanted to (about 50% of what I paid, and about 60% of what a new comparable replacement would cost).

Currently writing this on my macbook pro from 2008. My dad uses a mac pro from 2008 too. He even edits videos and pictures on it.

here is my usage from activity monitor. I think my swap use is higher than yours because i just woke my computer up from suspend. I'm using half my memory with android studio, two different web browsers, and Libre office open. I don't see any reason to get more than 8GB on a MacBook, I'm not expecting any need for an upgrade in the near future, maybe 3 years time and a couple of OS upgrades well need more?

Yesterday when I was using it, it lagged for a bit.... So i thought it was the ram......

Yeah I just realise too my mac was bought at 2012. My last laptop a lenovo one lasted me less than 3 years.

I have an SSD, if you said thermal throttling might be the probable cause then I think it was because I was connecting my macbook to a monitor.

When I did that sometimes my laptop get really hot and loud. Like the fans just kick in. 

If it is not broken, let's fix till it is.

how are you connecting the MacBook to the monitor? I use airplay and its inheritantly laggy and nothing can be done about it. I don't have any issues with using a thunderbolt to HDMI cable. it performs better if you use mirroring than using an extended display

Same here. I use a thunderbolt to HDMI cable. And use mirroring as well.

Earlier you told your RAM usage is often close to 100%, that is definitely going to impact performance. You should also rule out overheating issues in any case. If you do get more RAM, make sure to get the right speed as the only way to "underclock" too fast RAM will be to stick a slower stick of RAM into the mix.

I will definitely keep that in mind. 

If I will purchase more RAM I will buy them @ exact same brand and exact same speed. 

If it is not broken, let's fix till it is.
