GTX 1080 vs 980ti in Boinc and Folding

Hey everyone,

My question is why does the GTX 1080 perform better at computing rankings than the 980ti although it has less CUDA cores. What Am I missing? Is it so much more efficient? Which would be your choice regarding BOINC and Folding @ Home ?

Thanks in advance!

dont quote me on this but i think it may have something to do with the clock speed

the 980ti has a clock speed of 1000MHz boosting to 1075MHz while the 1080 has a clock speed of 1607MHz boosting to 1733MHz so while it has less CUDA cores its got a significantly higher clock speed so it is like you say more efficient.

I lurk a lot

While the 980ti might have more raw performance in some cases, I'd still always go for the 1070 (it's equally priced competitor nowadays) due to much superior power efficiency.

It is mostly the clock speed.

Though, the 1070 and 1080 are more efficient.  Their price is still up there.  Reason I been having a ball nabbing cheap used 980Tis.  (Soon to have a third that can clock over 1500MHz)

Though, if you do a project such as GPUGRID.  The 980Tis are still holding the top.  https://www.gpugrid.net/performance.php

O, hey, I recognize No.15 user.  Crazy BeerCan on the other forum I fold for.  Dude has a ridiculous amounts of GPUs.
