Why is it that super rugged tablets have crap screens?

beaker15

I am replacing my ThinkPad sometime in the near future and would like to get a tablet, looking at getting the surface pro 5 (when it comes out) but I would like to get something more rugged. For example would love to buy and use the Dell Rugged Tablet 12 but the screen is a deal breaker for me, its only 1366x768. The two problems with that screen is that it is a low resolution (1600x900 is my minimum resolution) and because its a 16:9 aspect ratio its kind of a pain using it in portrait mode. Any one else feel this issue? FYI does any one have any clues on when the surface pro 5 is being announced?

You can buy an otterbox rugged case for a Pro 4 (or Pro 5 when it launches) :).

Judge a product on its own merits AND the company that made it.

maybe those panels are certified for more harsh working enviroments and the tech on that front just lays behind? or maybe there just isn't a market for heavy duty high res screens.

Anything designed for rugged and heavy duty use has to make sacrafices somewhere for cost, and other reasons.

Also most people who need a heavy duty tablet don't need a fancy display just something that is reliable.

It has to do with one big factor: cost.

Ruggedizing a display costs a lot of money; the amount of R&D, labor, testing, etc behind it is surprising.

To keep the cost of the device realistic a compromise is made with the hardware.

There isn't really a market for power user ruggedized tablets as those would cost more than a vehicle.

Actually yes, I was looking at buying a UAG case for my future Surface.  slightly different from the one in the pic though. This one: https://urbanarmorgear.com/collections/surface-pro-4-cases/products/microsoft-surface-pro-4-case?variant=5972099140

that way it has a spot to put the digitizer.
