What killed VR?

Has the diminished experience of mobile VR killed its bigger brother on the PC? Is cost the only factor affecting purchasing decisions? The answer may not be so simple...

Actually that's exactly why it's dead (according to Linus before any dimwits come here to argue with me about it) it should have gained some sort of traction by now otherwise not enough support might be forthcoming and no more units will move cause of the lack of support and it's basically a non-starter.

Don't start claiming it's dead before it actually is, you'll just spread the word and people will share it and start to believe it. It's far from dead. Clickbait incorrect title that is going to spread a notion that may legitimately harm the product. Adoption is slow, but it's far from dead.

As much as people don't want to believe it, there's actually a lot of accuracy to that argument.

 

If high-end investors see this as a failure due to the abysmal start, scaling will be difficult for headset makers as it may become difficult to secure an increased level of investment and therefore costs may take YEARS to drop (due to an inability to reach an "economies of scale" level of production), compounding the problem.

I don't think VR is dead, just unconcious. Until we get cheaper desktop headsets and cheaper VR ready PCs, it's a no-go for Joe Average.

Right - but that's a massive issue. It will take much longer to see a decrease in costs with the abysmal market right now. All smart investors will be looking at mobile VR as the "success." That's a massive issue for anyone that hopes to have a desktop VR headset at a reasonable price within the next 5 years.

Indeed. Need cheaper desktop VR, but no-one's interested or investing, so no cheaper desktop VR gets made, so still no-one's interested, so still no cheaper desktop VR... vicious cycle.

I would like to see what happens with Daydream VR. PS4 VR is also something that might be appealing to console users (I can see why).

 

What we really need is something that is within the 300-400 USD range. Tech will have to evolve a little as well. (OK, a lot) I don't see VR as failed, just more like 4K in the sense that it will take a while to catch on and become more practice for more people.

I am currently saving for an PS4 Pro and a PS VR. I will have to wait for spring until I can afford it ^^

Tried PSVR this morning.
 

In my opinion it's lightyears away from desktop VR. Tracking is pretty bad, no focus on the lenses (lots of headset adjustment which is great as the headset is fairly comfortable), obstruction is a MASSIVE problem as there is only one sensing camera.

PSVR will sell because of AAA titles and familiar characters, but even that may have a negative effect on desktop VR sales as it's much more accessible and many people have the potential to equate the experiences as "equal."

First gen VR was never going to get mass adoption, Linus should be ashamed he was surprised that Vive/Oculus sales peaked.

I haven't been able to try anything other than Google Cardboard, unfortunately.

 

I'll take your word for it. That's really unfortunate that something that had such potential seems to have flopped. 

 

Now the question becomes "Who builds the cheap headset?" Maybe the first step in that should be hacking the Vive software/firmware and building something that works almost as well for a lower price. I'm not sure this would accomplish anything, but it would be a fun project.

VR will probably just keep coming in and out of the market until the end of time, each phase better but lacking something important. For me it's the games this time. None of them appeal to me, the only good VR games are the normal AAA titles that you have to emulate. Sure Job Simulator looks fun to mess around with but it doesn't justify the cost of everything.

VR is still in it's infancy at less than 8 months into consumer release, price will come down. Seriously Luke, settle down with your click baity title, this video has no substance, like desktop VR, but content should be coming, a lot of VR games are being made by indies with limited funding and staff. You know this, I know this, the whole VR community knows this. Don't just jump to conclusions for views. I thought LTT was striving to be a credible source of tech knowledge. Might as well quit creating reviews and focus on making CSF into a no effort let's play channel if quick cash is all you're looking for now.

Paradox Interactive's CEO pointed out a very good point a while ago. So far, VR companies seems to focus on winning the VR war instead of trying to meet some form of end-user demand. Plus, at the current VR prices, I don't see VR become mainstream anytime soon.
