Nintendo to finally shed more details about the NX early tomorrow (Update: this is the Nintendo Switch)

Anyways Nintendo said the NX will launch march 2017 early this year, rumors point to the device being a hybrid between a portable (like a 3DS) and home console (like the Wii U) and that it was powered by an Nvidia chip, games should run at 900p in portable mode and 1080p in console mode and performance should be inside the envelope of the Xbox one and PS4

 

A few game have been announced for the NX such as Zelda Breath of the wild and the next just dance game, rumors point that Nintendo also has a lineup of its main franchises for the NX like mario and pokemon.

Update: it has been revealed, the console codenamed NX is called the Switch and TBH it looks kinda sick

 

The preview trailer confirms some rumors, it's definetly a hybrid console and portable, the portable screen doesn't look bigger that 7" controllers snap right to the side of the screen in portable mode, the base is bigger that the device so there could be more beefy hardware in it, you can hot swap between the two modes by just undocking the screen.

 

games shown are the new zelda, definetly skyrim remastered, 2k nba, a mario game and splatoon, maybe a sequel?

These rumors may have some merit as designs for the system that leaked around the same time depict the system in 2 of three of its 'forms'.

 

I'm actually pleasantly surprised to see that the rumors are true, having a third real competitor in the console space can only be good for the industry. The collaborative aspect of the mobile tablet will likely be the factor that Nintendo is relying on. Of course being a mobile device AAA titles that we see on the PS4/XBone probably won't make an appearance but that has never been Nintendo's forte. We will most likely see a wave of first party games and remasters (Skyrim was shown extensively in the trailer) at first.

 

The tablet itself has two controllers, one on either side that can be detached to function as two separate controllers or one controller split over two hands.

full disclosure - nintendo shareholder

from what nintendo told the shareholders, it'll run a nvidia tegra chip i think its gen 3, and will outperfrom the new xbox one s and ps4 pro. it's only 299 too with a bundle of 4 games, don't blame me if you end up losing money, but i think buying some shares of nintendo (ntdoy) tomorrow at opening and then dumping them around closing, you'll make some good money. The last time mario run got announced, nintendo jumped 30 percent in share price.

AFAIK the rumors point to performance of the normal ps4 and xbone, not ps4 pro.

tegra 3 has better performance than the ps4 or xbox one - it may even out class one s but not scorpio. It's 299 with 4 games, so the console price is really around the 180 dollar mark - which is a steal - im definitely pre ordering one  - you can play on the go

When you mean mobile are you meaning their handheld?

I have a feeling that theyre going to announce it for the holiday season where it will be buried under everything else. I love nintendo, but I was underwhelmed by the Wii U. They need to be strong out of the gate.

To be fair I think it's unlikely we'll find out for sure what it's running until much closer to launch. But assuming they show the system in this trailer (a fair assumption) I think it'll become clear what chips it isn't running. For example if they show it as the hybrid system that has been rumoured? It's not going to be running a full desktop/laptop style GPU/CPU. And if the thing is a large, square box with games on full sized optical disks? It's probably not running a mobile processor.

 

But personally I think that given what has been rumoured so far? That it's a system with a screen you can take with you and that they're going to use cartridges? It all kinda leans a lot more towards the Tegra rumour than anything else. And frankly the Tegra rumour is the only specific chip rumour that's not just some kid throwing darts at the board and posting it on youtube.

Do you know whether or not it's using the X2 or a custom chip? Also if it outclasses the PS4 it'll definitely outclass the One S.

Don't see this happening. A chip that strong would be way too power hungry for a mobile device. PS4 Pro is about equal to an RX 470, which uses about 120-150 watts. Nvidia has an efficiency lead, but matching that with a mobile SOC would be literal magic. The only way I could see them getting close is if the GPU is a good bit ahead of the normal PS4 (10-20%) and the CPU is significantly stronger (very possible given the improved IPC of even standard ARM cores over the consoles older Jaguar cores). I mean we've seen the Xbox One actually outperform the PS4 in some games simply because of the relatively small CPU advantage it has. Even then, the GPU difference between the hypothetical NX and the PS4 Pro is much larger than the gap between the PS4 and Xbox One, so you're most likely not going to see that kind of catch up.

I wonder if some of the nintendo games will feature on the SHIELD TV which also utilizes a tegra X1 chip, which is very similar to the X2 slated for the NX. Would be interesting.

Please don't let the NX be an updated version of the Wii U.  I've seen rumored prototypes and talk about it relying on gimmicky things which is fine, as long as we get a new Nintendo titles that play like regular games and don't rely on motion controls or something of the sort.
