980 or RX 480

For 3-4 years which should I go for? 980 is EVGA and 480 is MSi Gaming X 4GB

For such a long time the RX 480 is the best option.

In general AMD cards age better than Nvidia and also you can get one with 8GB ram.

Maybe it doesn't matter now but it will matter in a few years

980 is a bit faster in DX11, but for such a period of time that you mentioned (3-4 years) the 8GB RX 480 is the way to go. Not only you won't be limited by the VRAM (while the 980 already is) but the driver support should be better and the performance should improve along with newer drivers

Just curious, why not consider the 1060 6GB? It's faster in most games and can overclock quite a bit higher. It will also be a solid performer for the next 3-4 years.

In some places the RX 480 4GB is on par with the 1060 3GB or even cheaper

I would rather have a 480 4GB than the 1060 3GB though. That card shouldn't exist and nobody should buy it.

Because its like $430 CAD and my budget is $360

3-4 years you say? 4gb Vram on the 980 can be a bottleneck even TODAY in some settings. And yes, i am talking about 1080p. 10% less performance are EASY to work with. Put 1 single setting 1 level down. From Ultra down to High. And voila, fps difference countered with 0.5% less picture quality. Maybe.. But if Vram isn't enough, you have to tone down Texture settings, shadows etc. That will make a biger impact on visuals, than 10% performance difference (That's why RX 470 8gb > RX 480 4gb)

 

Not even speaking about Maxwell beeing "old", compared to pascal.

 

Never go with old architecture, if the Price difference isn't huge (like <199 for a new good custom 980).

 

 

Also, 1060 > RX 480 right now, by 7-10%~ overall.

 

However, if a 1060 in your country cost alot more than a 480, then just get the 480 and be happy with it. ^^

If you don't have enough Vram that doesn't mean the card won't run the game. If you look at benchmarks of the gtx 960 2gb vs the gtx 960 4gb all that happens when Vram becomes an issue is you get lower fps. Also idk why everyone is saying 4gb of Vram isn't enough for 1080p gaming currently? I mean yeah I would go with the rx 480 personally but it wouldn't be about the 8gb of Vram. It would be about the better dx12 and Vulcan performance in the future.

within 3 months the 480 will still be behind... in 6 months the 480 will still be behind in a year+ the 480 will catch up... The 480 is a great card, it really is, but performance wise for now, when it matters, it is inferior.

Seeing BF4 benchmarks the 480 looks like a better card IMO. But the 1060 is up there too

Whichever is cheaper since by 3-4 years time you're going to be lowering your game's settings to achieve that 60 FPS mark which means lower VRAM usage, so VRAM is somewhat insignificant by then.

According to this benchmark, the 970 and 480 are neck and neck in BF4. If the 1060 and 980 are almost the same in terms of performance, then how exactly could the 480 be a better card?

 

Then in this benchmark of BF1, similar to BF4 in terms of performance, the 1060 is almost always ahead by more than 5fps?

 

Can you link me to your benchmarks if theyre more reliable?

It did with the previous architecture, but that may not be the case with all AMD GPU's moving forward. The higher overclockability on Nvidia cards makes up for it IMO. 

 

In the end, just choose the card that best suits your budget at the time and enjoy. I would stay with Nvidia for the better overclocking and Shadowplay, but if those things are not important to you and the 480 is at a better price, then go with that.

Nvidia is about 20-30% more expensive here .. Hell even compared to the 1070 the 1060 is overpriced 

1060 6GB at 369 euro vs a 1070 at 449...
