you only really need a Z170 motherboard if you buy an overclockable chip (ending with "K"). I recommend an H170 or H110 board, to save a few dollars. Also, you would be plenty fine with a good quality 550 or 650W power supply, something like an EVGA 650 G2

My Build, v2.1 --- CPU: i7-8700K @ 5.2GHz/1.288v || MoBo: Asus ROG STRIX Z390-E Gaming || RAM: 4x4GB G.SKILL Ripjaws 4 2666 14-14-14-33 || Cooler: Custom Loop || GPU: EVGA GTX 1080 Ti SC Black, on water || PSU: EVGA G2 850W || Case: Corsair 450D || SSD: 850 Evo 250GB, Intel 660p 2TB || Storage: WD Blue 2TB || G502 & Glorious PCGR Fully Custom 80% Keyboard || MX34VQ, PG278Q, PB278Q

Audio --- Headphones: Massdrop x Sennheiser HD 6XX || Amp: Schiit Audio Magni 3 || DAC: Schiit Audio Modi 3 || Mic: Blue Yeti

[Under Construction]

My Truck --- 2002 F-350 7.3 Powerstroke || 6-speed

My Car --- 2006 Mustang GT || 5-speed || BBK LTs, O/R X, MBRP Cat-back || BBK Lowering Springs, LCAs || 2007 GT500 wheels w/ 245s/285s

The Experiment --- CPU: i5-3570K @ 4.0 GHz || MoBo: Asus P8Z77-V LK || RAM: 16GB Corsair 1600 4x4 || Cooler: CM Hyper 212 Evo || GPUs: Asus GTX 750 Ti, || PSU: Corsair TX750M Gold || Case: Thermaltake Core G21 TG || SSD: 840 Pro 128GB || HDD: Seagate Barracuda 2TB

R.I.P. Asus X99-A motherboard, April 2016 - October 2018, may you rest in peace. 5820K, if I ever buy you a new board, it'll be a good one.

800W PSU?? that's very powerful. probably too powerful for your system. Also, for 1500 USD you can get better hardware than the i5 6500 and gtx 1060.

Well, for the PSU, I think 500W is enough, for the CPU, at least get an i5 6600k, it's not that much more expensive, but more powerful, and overclockable. Since you have a z170 mobo, it would be a waste of money to put in a cpu that's not even OC'able.

CPU - the i7 will give you considerably more processing power than the i5 and will also give better performance in games.

GPU - this will be good for 1440p at 60 fps on high or 100+ on medium, but you can upgrade to a GTX 1080 to get those guaranteed 120+ fps on high/max

PSU - Very solid reliable PSU

OS - you can get windows 10 from kinguin.net for about $27

I'm sick of people pretending like 8 gigs of ram is good enough. It's not even good enough for chrome as my laptop painfully shows.

Get 16 gigs, it's not that much more and you'll definitely use it at some point.

As all of these replies show, for 1500 USD you can get a MUCH faster pc, with 16 gigs of RAM, and even a core i7 6700. Actually, you could even get a 6700K.

Stay 16 with RAM. 8 Is overall edge, but with 16 no need to worry anymore. So 16. The speed is not needed and the extra performance is so marginal that you most likely never would notice, but i'f it's a marginal budget increase over the 2133/2400 stick with that speed.

For the SSD: you will overall not notice that difference in performance so only reason why would be the longer warranty. So would say 850 evo. You can also consider for your budget to take the 750 evo. It's their newer budget SSD. Nice thing of it is that it almost performs the same as the 850, but for a nicer price. Also doubt you would notice that difference in performance, but this one has 3 years warranty instead of 5.

Don't go crazy with 850w PSU, so take a 550 or 650 atmost and save the dosh. With those you can still run a OCed titan Xp setup without issues.

Even for a possible SLI with like 1070 orso the 650 is enough.

GPU is fine: 1070 Strix is a very good performing cooler = important because of GPU boost but it's a relative noisy one compared to some other good performers (no jet though). If you find silence also important consider the MSI gaming variants or the EVGA ACX 3.0 coolers. From the current gen coolers I prefer EVGA. Good performing and also silent.

Since you already put a Z170 board in take an unlocked variant. Even if you don't OC now it can be used to increase useable lifespan in the future by several years. If you hit the performance limit of a locked CPU you need a upgrade. Thats more expensive in the long run.

Even if you had no Z170 I would still recommend going unlocked because of above reason. Many people in the past have thanked me for making them do that.

It only requires you to have an seperate cooler then (unless you already have one). If not recommend the Scythe Fuma, imo the very best aircooler currently: High end performance trading blows with the top Noctua's but at a very decent pricepoint.

The object of life is not to be on the side of the majority, but to escape finding oneself in the ranks of the insane.

You can upgrade the build I put together with a Gigabyte G1 Gaming GTX 1080 for about $215 dollars more.

SSD - Pro and Evo perform basically identical

GPU - I would go for the gtx 1080 because a 1070 would struggle to push out over 60-80 fps in 1440p (medium to high settings)
