Star Citizen Single-Player Delayed Indefinitely

Cloud Imperium Games, makers of the sprawling, controversial, and long-delayed space simulator/FPS shooter/single-player space combat title known as Star Citizen, announced the game’s single-player campaign, Squadron 42, will be delayed indefinitely. The reason is simple: With so much left undone, there are huge chunks of the single-player campaign yet unfinished. CIG had originally promised Squadron 42 would ship in 2016, but it’s now clear there’s no way that could happen. The fact that the company has yet to announce a new shipping date isn’t particularly promising, either.

 

 

I and many others have been warning you from the beginning. This is a Ponzi Scheme. Stop giving away your money on a project they do not have any intention of finishing! They are taking it in while not increasing staff. It's OBVIOUS!

Development started in 2012, don't act like this is normal development schedule. The game was waaaaaaaay over promised and waaaaay under delivered. This is something that'll take 50 years to finish.

That would be 4 years, at which point "indefinite" isn't really acceptable any longer. It also ignores the other points OP made.

I don't expect the game before 2018 at the earliest really, so no surprise here. It's a massive game, and although they are using CryEngine, they've heavly modified it, so I guess they've basically wrote their own engine at the same time. This stuff takes time.

The game they promised in the kickstarter was a lot less than what they are promising now. It just seems like it is taking forever because you normally don't observe the progress of a game being developed so publicly. It was also the very end of 2012 when it started.

Star Citizen and Squadron 42 are technically two games that take place in the same universe. A lot of the resources are shared but they are separate.

Of what was promised in when it was started, basically none of it is done. I would be surprised if the game was legitimately finished in the next two decades. It just isn't happening.

I've achieved their last 4 months of progress on my own in the same time for a graphics class in Uni. I know how long crap takes. You people are delusional. Actual SEC filings say they haven't hired anyone for 6 months.

It seems like it would run horribly judging by the demos but then again the giant worm was at 80FPS

Dell was having a $600 off sale for the fully specced out model, so I decided to get it :P

Fully specced out early 2013 Macbook "pro" with gt 650m and constant 105c temperature on the CPU (GPU is 80-90C) when doing anything intensive...

A 2013 laptop with a regular sized battery still has better battery life than a 2017 laptop with a massive battery! I think this is a testament to apple's ability at making laptops, or maybe how little CPU technology has improved even 4+ years later (at least, until the recent introduction of 15W 4 core CPUs). Anyway, I'm never going to get a 35W CPU laptop again unless battery technology becomes ~5x better than as it is in 2018.

Apple knows how to make proper consumer-grade laptops (they don't know how to make pro laptops though). I guess this mostly software power efficiency related, but getting a mac makes perfect sense if you want a portable/powerful laptop that can do anything you want it to with great battery life.

Hold up. There is real progress being made that is undenyable. It may or may not be finished but that is like any game ever. Development started what 4 years ago with a major change in scale after the first year. Doing some quick comparisons mass effect 4 was announced Nov 2012 it will be releasing q1 of 2017. Assuming the story and some ground work was done at announcement that gives CIG a few months ahead of them at this moment. Take into account the lack of an engine and full sized team. 

 

 

So you can say the game will never be finished but we are still safely in the normal dev. cycle. So I support adding money to it ahead of the value of what is currently out no. But if you are honestly saying nothing is being done you are blind.

I highly doubt it.
They've re-written huge chunks of the fps pipeline of Cryengine and the hard coded object system. 
The fps system alone is probably the most complicated in a game to date, they're using a single connected 1st person and 3rd person animation system combined with real time head and eye stabilization.(The only game that does anything similar is Arma 3.)
They've also re-written most of the net code and how the server back end functions, which has been the main performance issue.
That system is also far more complex than most games, as it's using a layered instancing system with different levels of communication between each layer, so that you can have different physics spaces and large distances with huge amounts of data without overloading the client or server like it is the case right now.

On top they've added the procedural system and re-written the lighting and skybox system of Cryengine.
The engine now supports real time atmospheric scattering that will change the sky color composition based on the position of the planet and the sun in the system.
And the sun is now the actual light source and they've also added orbits and planet rotation.

These things alone are massive undertakings and are already far beyond what most games do and it barely scratches the surface of the progress they've made.

And they have been hiring staff you just can't find anything in the SEC fillings, because their US studios are all pretty much fully staffed.
The UK studio is now bigger than the US studio and the Frankfurt studio has been growing in size steadily, they have currently around 50 open position for the 2 EU studios.
The US studios on the other hand have only 5 actual development positions open the rest are all support and QA.

Seems like they keep making it bigger and bigger.... sometimes it's not good to be a perfectionist when developing games. Bioshock Infinite took 5 years and that was single player only. Then.... they had the DLC....

Star Citizen is one of the most ambitious game projects ever undertaken, and Chris Roberts is motivated out of personal passion rather than business goals, so delays don't surprise me, nor do they really concern me.

 

Obviously, the design goals have increased dramatically since the projects inception, and so the development for SC hasn't been particularly long, for as big a title as it is becoming.

Disassembly and decompilation of executables and dlls is not particularly difficult thanks to the LLVM toolchains. I can see the transformations going on, and they're slowed way down from a year ago.
