GPU Requirements on Barebones Server

I'll am putting together a server build and I am most likely going to use this bare-bones system from Supermicro

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816101794

My question is about processor compatibility.  I would like to run a Xeon E3-1200 series processor, namely this one because of the hyper-threading.

The question arise when I start looking at the graphics option.  Newegg and Intel do not list any on board graphics for the E3-1231V3.  Will this work in the Supermicro barebones system or do I need to get a cpu with onboard graphics, like the E3-1226.  If I wanted to use the E3-1231 would I need to run an external GPU? Are there cheep options? Can I use the GT-640 that I have lying around? Thanks

The e3-1231 v3 has a built in iGPU. The e3-1230 v3 for example does not. Note the number 1 at the end instead of 0.

Edit: My bad, I mixed up the 1 and 5. The e3-1235 v3 would have an igpu whereas the the 1231 wouldn't.

The board has a gpu built in. It will not use the igpu.

the e3 1231 v3 doesnt have a igpu only the parts ending in 5 and 6 do

what woodenmarker said is correct, but if you really feel like it, you could always use that GT-640 you have! who knows, it might come in handy in keeping as much load off of the CPU as possible?

Thanks for the responses.  I "have" the GT-640, meaning it is in my main system and I have been meaning to upgrade.

It looks like it is going to work out fine.  I will post the full build once it is complete.

It won't help at all unless your using a gpu specific program.

For most server use a gpu is useless. all it will do is use power.

You could save a few bucks buy buying a used server off ebay http://www.ebay.com/itm/Dell-T20-PowerEdge-Server-Intel-Pentium-1x-G3220-3-0GHz-2-Core-4GB-1x-500GB-SATA-/311694336458?hash=item48926e21ca:g:FuwAAOSw-kdX0vNs

Server motherboards typically have their own onboard VGA, which that server does.

VGA BMC integrated ASPEED AST2400

You can get Xeons in the lower end chipsets that have iGPUs but there isn't really any need to do so unless the motherboard doesn't have it's own.

The higher end E5 and E7 Xeons have no iGPUs at all, Intel simply doesn't make them for these. Server motherboards that use these Xeons always have onbaord VGA as you never put a dedicated GPU in a server unless there is a specific need to which is extremely rare.

Thanks for the correction. I had confused the 5 and 1 at the end.
