Which Monitor Should I Get? (GTX 1070)

13 members have voted

  1. 1. Monitors:

    • ASUS PB278Q 27"1440p IPS 60hz $389 [Basically Eliminated bc of GW2765HT and PX277]
    • BenQ GW2765HT 27" 1440p IPS 60hz $329
    • Acer XG270HU 27" 1440p TN 144hz 1ms $379
    • Pixio PX277 27" 1440p IPS 144hz $389
    • AOC U2879VF 28" 4K TN 60hz $299

Which should I get?

AOC U2879VF 4K TN 60hz Monitor $299.99

4K, 28", but is TN not IPS and has medium bezels.

OR

Acer G2587HU smidpx 25" 1440p IPS 60hz Monitor $263.19

Basically no bezels, lower than the other 25" monitor, but maybe not as good?

OR

ASUS PB258Q 25" 1440p IPS 60hz Monitor $300.07

Basically no bezels, better than the Acer?

OR

ASUS PB278Q 27" 1440p IPS 60-75hz? Monitor $349.99

Wide bezels, not as good as the 277Q, basically ruled out

OR

ASUS PB2777Q 27" 1440p TN 75hz 1ms Monitor $339.99

Slimmer bezels... but still noticeable and TN

I really wanted a 4K IPS monitor or a 1440p IPS 144hz monitor, but I couldn't find any in the $250-350 price range.

4K TN is a pretty bad idea. IPS is essentially required to take advantage of 4K for a better viewing experience.

Out of the list, I'd go with the PB278Q or the G257HU to save some money. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824009728&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction&cm_mmc=AFC-C8Junction-PCPartPicker, LLC-_-na-_-na-_-na&cm_sp=&AID=10446076&PID=3938566&SID=

The PB277Q is a TN according to the ASUS website: https://www.asus.com/us/Monitors/PB277Q/specifications/. I have a PB278Q, and while the bezels are large, it's my only monitor so I don't really notice them.

are you going to be playing games? the 1070 won't do too well at 4K, unless you're ok with dropping a lot of settings or staying at 30fps (different if you play older titles). 1440p IPS is a nice combo for the 1070

Yes, and I did see that mention a lot by others who saw the AOC monitor recommended to me. What's the 4K to 1440p scaling like?

considering the amount of pixel difference is roughly 45%, 1440p on a 4k panel will be a bit blurrier

Ah ok then. So don't go 4K? Note: I'm going to be running SLI 1070s in the future.

SLI 1070s will do much better at 4K. but remember that there are drawbacks to having SLI, like power draw, heat, games not scaling well / not supporting it, etc.

Then... how does 4K scale to 1080p? I could get a 4K monitor and play games at 1080p/1440p until I get SLI.

1080p won't look very good on a 4k panel. could look better on a 4k tv, which can upscale the image

if you're still looking forward to 4k i would sell the 1070 when the 1080ti comes out and get that.

I wouldnt go 4k unless you have a 1080 and if your OK with frames being less than 60, closer to 40-55 most games. Otherwise get a 1440p high hz monitor.

Are you basing that off having a 4k monitor and a 1080 or just your perception based on reviews.

pretty much the latter. the 1080ti i'm unsure about, as there's only leaked specs, but it's most likely faster than a 1080 but slower than the titan XP

I think that's the problem though. It's all conjecture without anyone actually having the setup up giving realistic feed back. I'm gonna start a thread on this.

I know the dilemma cause I'm in it right now. I have a 1440p with the 1080, and I'm going 4k monitor soon as I get all the boxes checked for what I want.

i have a 1070 and a 1440p panel, and i know that it's a good pair. a single 1070 will not do well at 4K. a 1080 works far better but still not enough. the titan XP is where 4K 60fps can be possible. the 1080ti may be in that territory as well

a single 1080 will fare better, believe me. but it's not enough unless you're willing to not run everything on ultra or deal with 30fps.

Soo... should I spend a little more for 1440p 144hz? Or should I go 60hz? I'm guessing no 4K right? Although... if I buy a 4K monitor I shouldn't ever have to change my monitor for a long while.

depends if you want to take advantage of +60fps gaming. games like overwatch, CS:GO, DOOM, etc. have unlocked framerates, and in addition input lag is thrown out the window. however you also need to consider the CPU and GPU. a single 1070 won't be able to hold a nice 100+ fps at 1440p in some titles, so you need SLI or a better card

if you care more about sheer image detail/clarity get a 4k (preferably IPS) monitor. think you'll be ok if you drop to 1080p or 1440p. only the image will look a bit blurrier and stretched out

Hey guys,

I'm looking for a 1440p 144hz monitor under $400, 25-30"

Preferred Features (by priority):

IPS

1-6ms response

G-Sync (probably not possible with this budget)

Right now I have the AOC U2879VF 28.0" 60Hz Monitor. Why this monitor?

4K. Even though I can't drive it that well with one 1070, I plan on SLI'ing in the future

Cheaper than 1440p IPS monitors.
