MSI 1060 6G or MSI RX 480 8GB

SpeeDemoN5

Okay, I'm still trying to make one of the hardest decisions in my life.In my country the MSI 1060 Gaming X 6GB and the MSI RX 480 8GB are the SAME price.

Currently im gaming on an 1080p monitor

Reasons in favor of RX 480

-2 GB more VRam but i doubt that will make a difference

-I can crossfire in the future if i buy a better motherboard(i have great cooling,my PSU is 700W and it will look sick)

-Maybe better in the future?

Reasons in favor of 1060

-Better performance in today's games at 1080p

-My CPU is an I5 4590 and i have heard that it can bottleneck the RX 480 but not the 1060?

Which one do you think i should go for?

Who said i5 4590 can bottleneck a rx 40 or 1060. You are fine

I would get GTX 1060

Definitely gtx 1060, because it's generally better in performance like you said, and games never use more than 6gb vram in 1080p resolution.

I have the Sapphire NITRO+ RX480 8G and love it. Runs very cool, only 260 or 270 dollars USD (Only about 20 dollars or so above MSRP. Reasonable when you consider the super quiet cooler and RGB lighting.) The difference in performance is so minute that it comes down to which company you prefer and what price you can get it for. I wanted to support AMD because they are FINALLY doing something right with GPUs and possibly CPUs from the leaked Zen benchmarks. I also HATE the geforce suite. Its almost bloatware its so bad.

Do you want Freesync in the future? or G-sync? Because G-sync costs you some a 100 dollars+ extra pr. monitor. Most screens today and in the future will have freesync/adaptive sync support in them.

Go for the 1060, it may only have 6GB of VRAM but Nvidia has improved on the consumption of VRAM so 6GB is perfect for 1920X1080 gaming.

Well, for software, I never liked Geforce Experience when I had it. I know it was changed recently and uses less RAM, but now you have to make an account and sign in to use. So, that part's weird. I like the look of Radeon Settings, but that software has a nice tendency to crash. Both can limit frame rate if needed. Nvidia through a small and easy to use utility you'll have to add and AMD through Radeon Settings. And I've only crashed the Nvidia driver (while overclocked) in Arkham Origins. No AMD crashes...yet.

Outside of that, both will work for your use case. If you want a synced monitor, Freesync is cheaper. If you're concerned about VRAM, RX 480 has more. But 1080p won't really need it unless you like extreme upscaling for AA. As for Crossfire, you probably won't buy another card to do it. Most people don't.

The 1060 generally perform better when using old APIs games eg. DX11 and OpenGL. The 480 however wins every time when using modern APIs like DX12 and Vulkan. This is mainly because AMD cards perform better when asynchronous compute is available (which is a major feature in DX12 and Vulkan). Regarding the GPUs I would even go so far as saying that 8 GB VRAM is overkill for 1080p, a 4 GB would easily be enough. However if you want it to be "future proof" 8 GB might be necessary, realisticly speaking the performance of the cards would probably be a bigger problem than VRAM. If you want to use Crossfire however 8 GB would be a good alternative. As mentioned previously by others you can consider if you want to use FreeSync or G-sync, which is basically the same thing btw. However G-sync requires a module which results in an extra cost for the screen... Regarding Crossfire support, with new APIs the scaling should definitely be much better and support grow wider. The RX480 can play "any" game at 1080p and have pretty good fps at 1440p today, so a second one would probably only be necessary for future more demanding games. And to be realistic the fps difference in games using old APIs is really minute.

TL;DR: If you plan on only gaming at 1080p, get a 4GB RX480. Get an 8 GB if you want to use crossfire later on for more demanding games. A 1060 if you want a few extra fps in games using old APIs.

Hope I helped! :)

RX480, Dx12 and Vulkan are the future, which means better gaming performance for the AMD card.

For me either MSI 480 or PowerColor 480 Red Devil. Both super quiet cards. If you want to overclock maybe go with sapphire, but it has a louder cooler.

Both options are great but it depends on your games, tough to be fair I think in the long run 2GB more VRAM will help. Yet if you want to upgrade next year that wont matter so pick the cheaper? :D (XFX GTR is also a good option)

Rules say no fanboyism. I simply didn't want to support a larger company that didn't need my money. The playing field isn't very even right now. If AMD were to fail with Zen, then they wouldn't advance in their CPU department at all. Meaning Intel could drive up the prices of their CPUs making entry level builds that perform semi well much more expensive. AMD is the one struggling for money, Intel and Nvidia aren't. Therefore if I were to get nearly the same performance, why not support the company that needs the support the most?

When they force ya to get that cancer GFE 3.0 how can you blame anybody for jumping ship? I mean the Radeon GPU market share went up 2-3% the day after GFE 3.0 was released... xD

I would go for the 1060, Even though it doesn't support SLI, you should be fine. Also for the bottleneck. Neither should bottleneck anything, You're fine.

Thank you all for the replies. The reason why i think the RX 480 will perform worse paired with my CPU is because of this reddit post. https://www.reddit.com/r/Amd/comments/4qi09o/dont_buy_rx_480_if_you_have_i3i5_not_ocd/  All of the benchmarks show that  RX480 paired with non overclocked i5  perform much worse than Nvidia.  This so far is the only reason stopping me from ordering the 480..

Yes the CPU overhead but I know AMD reduced it down a bit on one of their later drivers but it is not on par with Nvidia yet in DX11 but in DX12 they are the same. :) (AMD also has issues with OpenGL for the same reason)
