i3 6100 vs Intel Xeon E-5 2670

aries757

what is best way? easiest was to do i3 6100 but xeon would prob have more performance, and how would price range, for xeon i'd use an cyroig c7 fan, and some cheap lga 2011 mobo

the xeon is probably fine overall for gaming if you're sure that motherboard works

the i3 would have slightly better single core performance

I edit my posts a lot, Twitter is @LordStreetguru just don't ask PC questions there mostly...

Spoiler

What is your budget/country for your new PC?

what monitor resolution/refresh rate?

What games or other software do you need to run?

the Xeon's motherboard is the downside, finding one will be pretty expensive.

Says he has one lying around I think

also the motherboard will be lacking in a lot of features most likely as it's more for servers/workstations, mostly just gimmicks though

Cheap 2011 board, LOL.

You are looking at $250USD for an used x79 board. and the chips have gone up to $80 per chip from $50, not worth it Unless you go dual cpus.

If you have programs that can use 16 threads the xeon will annihilate the i3, but for single threaded performance the i3 is way better, if you are just gaming get an i3, or try to get an i5.

 •E5-2670 @2.7GHz • Intel DX79SI • EVGA 970 SSC• GSkill Sniper 8Gb ddr3 • Corsair Spec 02 • Corsair RM750 • HyperX 120Gb SSD • Hitachi 2Tb HDD •

Then no just get an i3 6100

or if you want 8 threads at a cheap price, search hard though old OEM systems for 2nd gen i7 stuff

What's your full budget and what are you going to use your PC for?

so multi-threaded machine then, what budget, if your budget is only for an i3 an FX 8 core is not a terrible option if you don't want to deal with used parts, but you will be limited in per core performance with it

I use one daily and it works fine if your goal isn't 144hz dota 2 or some other very CPU intensive games

Once you OC to 4+ghz which is easy, you basically have multi-threaded performance on par with a haswell i7, though the chip turbos to 4.2ghz from the get go
