3G 1060 or 4G 470?

Where I live both the 4gb RX470 and the 3gb GTX1060 are priced the same, Both the RX480 and GTX 1060 6gb are about 300 euro and I cant affort to spend more than 220 on a new graphics card so it wil be a choice between the 470 and 3gb 1060. which one should I get? I want to play AAA games at 1080p 60hz.

Intel Core i-7 920 2.66 Ghz

12gb RAM

550Watt PSU

Pagetron Motherboard

120gb SSD

620gb 7200rpm HDD

And the ati hd5770 which I will be replacing.

The 1060 will do much better at 1080p while its downside is DX11 games but DX12 recently came out thus there is some 'future-proofing' there. DO NOT BUY A 3GB CARD FOR 1080p. I have 2 of those - VRAM is a MAJOR issue. Both my R9 280 and 970M have VRAM issues.

Can I just say how a 3GB 1060=/=6GB 1060? It's probably more like this: 6GB 1060>RX480 8GB>RX480 4GB (only because how it has less Vram and lower memory clocks out of the factory)>1060 3GB > or = RX470 4GB

3GB 1060 has 10% less shaders and the drivers control GPU when you hit the 3GB limit now so you get performance akin to a 470 or lower in some cases. Nvidia added that to avoid stuttering but the result is MUCH lower performance

Depending on the game and clock speeds (look at @don_svetlio post)

 

And no, 4GB really is the minimum for 1080p gaming now, I've hit 3.6GB 1080p on R6S and 3.4GB on GTA 5 so...it is valid  (and they are powerful enough cards to push games at 1080p ultra so no excuses for turning settings down).

 

Also OP, look around for 4GB RX480s, they aren't that much more than the 3GB 1060/RX470s...

You know what, just get the one which is cheaper. (even by a few cents)

While the GTX 1060 beats the RX 470 by raw performance, that 3gb of VRAM is really really limiting and can result in much lower performance so the majority of the card just downgrades

 

Get the RX 470 or if you could bare for a little more get a RX 480 4gb

I am getting the rx470, I'd rather have 1gb more vram than about a 10% fps increase.

Its mostly even worse than that, since as don said, once it passes 3gb it just limits the cards performance to stop micro stuttering
