help with transferring data

what are some methods to transfer stuff from a old HDD to a new one.i found a HDD that i had on a old laptop and i swapped it out with the HDD on my new desktop to see if what was in it. turned out it had a lot of old pictures that i lost a while back and when i tried plugging in a USB memory stick(to transfer the files) it wont recognize it, and it wont connect to my home network even though my Ethernet cable that is hooked up to the mother board. im not sure what the issue is but any help is very appreciated.
