Connecting Two Routers Together

Shahin

So my main router has the following ports WAN, Gigabit Ethernet and Ethernet.

I would like to add another router to the main router which has the same ports. Which connections should I plug it on each router?

WAN is for your modem to connect, the other two should work, if if specifies gigabit for one then the other is probabbly only 100mbps, if you need more speed then that use the gigabit port.

you can connect routers wan to lan no setting to be changed but pc's on each router wont be able to see each other

you can connect routers lan to lan but you need to disable DHCP on the router that dose not have the internet plugged in but all pcs will be able to see each other for file sharing etc.

Why do you need a second router? Why just just get a 5-8 port switch?

Not quite - you also need to disable NAT/PAT and not all routers are capable of this.

Basically I'm in a student house and the router is really far away so wifi is bad. I also need Ethernet for the PC. so I am going to use powerline and have a second router in my room for stronger signal and ethernet.

Yep,  disable NAT/PAT as windspeed said.

Might be easier yo just get a 8 port gigabit switch then connect a wireless access point to that.

Heck I know there are Powerline adaptors that act as Access points + give out 1 or two gigabit ports. you don't need a router.

What you're after is an access point, not a router. Which one you should get depends on your budget, what you have and what you're after.

Option 1: AP/Powerline combo

Option 2: AP/Switch combo (combine with Powerline adapter)

Option 3: AP (combine with Powerline adapter + Switch)
