Oculus Rift or Vive?

RADEON_GUY

So since oculus rift has been recently released in the UK and it's cheaper than the HTC vive, I want to know which one is the overall better headset. The oculus is £200 cheaper than the vive, but it lacks the motion controls. Can someone who has tried both headsets tell me which one is worth my money? thanks!

Do you have a wide open room to play VR in? If not you would want the Rift, if you do have a nice open space the Vive is a good option. Anyways, Linus/Luke did a cool vid on it a while ago, might wanna check it out.

Agreed. Unless you either have a game you realllllyyyyyy want in VR, or just have money to spend (and space to use the VR) I would wait. Even the Rift to get it's full features you need pretty much a dedicated room.

Future houses may be built with such rooms :D

I do have quite a large area (8ft by 8ft) for VR so that isn't a problem. Seeing as the rift also has the (upcoming) motion controllers (which look rudimentary compared to the vive, still it's way cheaper) vive might not be the only option when it comes to room scale vr

Your best shot is going elsewhere online and looking for reviews.

Not necessarily. There are mods which enable games like GTA to be played in vr.

Oh, cool haven't seen the Rift motion controllers yet.

Ehh, but those are mods adding compatability for VR, the game wasn't made for it (Elite: Dangerous was, and is amazing) but I think that's what he means by second gen VR when it is more mainstream and refined.

Vive is better if you have space.

As long as you don't try to use it with Rocket League.

Yes, if you're able to utilise it.

I haven't tried the Rift but seeing as how the Vive was motion-control designed I would suspect that they'll have the better hardware and software for it vs Oculus. Personally I'd prefer to be standing with my Vive when playing most games since the fatigue that sets in after half-hour gaming sessions is worth it. Horror is much better as well as you're focused on picking something up in "A Chair in a Room" but once you're about 1 foot away an arm quickly swipes from under a cabinet and having the sensation of being immersed, physically and mentally, is something I don't experience as strongly when sitting. Same with games like Project Cars where looking around allows a better view of the apex of turns and better depth perception.

My question to you would be: "How do you want to play?"

As a Rift Owner, I'd have to say get the Vive. The Rift is a pretty competent piece of hardware, but the driver installation will be a nightmare for you if you've ever had a RAID, use a VPN, own an antivirus, or have your firewall enabled. Or at least that's how it went in my experience. I actually had to install on a second computer with a fresh dist. of Windows to make it work.

Then there's the problems of controllers and room scale. The Rift has neither of those things (yet), and I think the lack of these key VR features combined with the horrible install process do not justify the price of the Rift. Sure its' $200 less than the Vive, but the Vive is just a more complete experience, and much easier to set up (or so I've heard...)

Needless to say I'll be selling my CV1 and buying a Vive.

Can I ask what OS, antivirus, and VPN?
