As I mentioned before the desktop pc plays the game and I stream it on the chromebook at 1080p@60 fps. The machine that does the heavy lifting is an i5 with a gtx 960 The machine I use to stream the picture and control the game is my celeron chromebook...

Not a bad setup - though I imagine some delay is present?

If I can suggest a challenge for you to, please put your laptops close to your bed and close your bedroom door, then run GTA5 at 1080p on ultra for... ohhh

Yea I can do that...pretty easily. ???????????????????????????????????? You can hear the fans at around 45db, but yea you can run it at ultra.

This is my desktop cooler so yeah passive is one way to put it... I also have the pc locked to a ventilated cabinet so again my noise standards are not average... But what if i fold you that I can stream my games 1080p@30 fps on my 50 inch TV using my android phone as a client (with xbox controller and ethernet adaptor connected to it) and its battery would still last more than an Alienware.

Okay, you have a desktop passive setup. There's no comparison. The BEST laptop in terms of acoustics currently on the market is the GT73VR and even then it's at about 30-35db. I can stream computational from a computer half a world away using my phone. What your point? Gaming laptops aren't designed for battery life, never have. Most you get is around 5.5 hours doing light work.

8 hours ago, gio_v said:

You can go ahead and do that 1060 in a laptop thing but it will then sound like a jet engine every one minute and it will never perform like its desktop counterpart because of thermal throttling.

None of my laptops sound like jet engines and none of them throttle because I'm a smart consumer and I don't buy trash LOL.

You're not seeing it from someone who needs to be mobile. Sure, if you're at home all day, a desktop will serve you far better. If you're like me flying 3 times a week and you never seen your "home", a desktop is literally meaningless. Car chargers are rated at 120w, and you can draw that fully with a good industrial car lighter charger. You have sockets on the plane, on the boat. I can get full power almost anywhere. If you can't understand the use of a high powered laptop it just means you haven't had that kind of job or lifestyle.

Nah delay is fine. Unless you're playing CS:GO or Mobas you won't really notice. In house streaming games to devices is fair easy and common these days.

Not a bad solution - though I'd personally use the X260 in that case - 18 hours of battery life is beastly :D

Yea it's what I currently do in regions with good LTE/Wifi. I plop my Zbook 15 down and just carry my T560 and stream it.

I thought that you were making the case that gaming (NOT WS) laptops have more use than desktops FOR GAMING. Anyway if you travel around the world for business and you need to do some gaming while waiting for an appointment for example or on a Starbucks like our friend on my previous post, I guess you can carry around whatever you want. My only point is that if you do most of your gaming at home (like me) you are better off with a good desktop pc and not an overpriced laptop.

Nah if you come home everyday, there's not alot of point in getting a super high end laptop. A case can be made for students with around 1000 dollars. At that price point it's hard to split the desktop and the laptop budget so around that you should just get a Y700 and be done with it. Even up to like 1.5k. Around 2k to 2.5k gaming laptops is where the value for them (if you have a home and stay there) is completely gone. You can get a high end desktop setup + a premium notebook around that price point.

That is my hole point, if you play games at 1080p you can do 700-8004$ desktop (only pc case you can easily hook it up to your TV) + 300-400$ decent ''ultrabook'' easily.  For 300-400$ you can get a variety of chromebooks and even some decent windows machines like  the ASUS VivoBook, Lenovo Yoga and Dell inspiron, and for 700-800$ you can build something like this. This combo will outperform almost any ''gaming laptop'' that costs bellow 1400$.

The PSU is quite poor and unstable in a warm environment (next to a GPU), the SSD is as slow as a 10K RPM drive (normal SATA 3 SSDs are MUCH faster), you forgot to include a 1080p matte IPS screen, quality speakers and a keyboard. You also forget that the 6700HQ (standard on gaming laptops) is the same (internally) as a 6700K with lower clockspeed thus the i3 6100 is less than half the performance of a 6700HQ and as such will be a bottleneck in some cases. Furthermore, the lack of a hard drive means no mass storage. If you account for all of those things (present on a gaming laptop of that caliber) then you are basically paying the same as a 1060 laptop can be had for 1400$ and those "upgrades" would cost basically 500-600$.

Moral of the story - desktops are becoming obsolete for the mainstream.

You can modify the build get a cheaper case and easily squeeze in an i5 6500-6600 that will Absolutely destroy The 6700HQ

1 - I do, it has cheap chinese caps, has average voltage regulation/ripple suppression and the thermal limit is only 40*C - mediocre. You would know that if you had read the review. A SeaSonic S12G or Corsair RMx is the minimum for such a build
2 - I've tried that - it looked blurry and input lag was a real issue (i5 4590 + R9 280)
3 - My Y50 has a 2.1 JBL audio system - it's superior to 99% of inbuilt speakers on ANY TV or Monitor and better than a good 60% of desktop speakers. Feel free to google
4 - I've benchmarked my i7 4720HQ vs my i5 4590 - i7 was around 20% faster (3.4GHz i7 vs 3.7GHz i5 - HT is a real nifty thing to have)
5 - Thing is - the V300 is TLC NAND and unlike the 850 EVO, it's not reliable for long-term usage. MLC NAND is a must - or good quality TLC 3D VNAND
