I agree, but other than encrypting my drives and having a secure password I have to hope that Microsoft keep on top of hole in their operating system.

Did hear about this but a long time ago didn't think it was still a thing well you learn something new every day also people could probably steal your laptop if you left it alone long enough so unless it's a secure location don't leave the damn thing charging alone(unsafe would be something like a libery)

Their is a gif on imgur that shows how you can get a back door into windows 98, I don't know if I can post the link or not, but if you google "Forgot your Windows 98 password? No problem." Its the first hit.

 

@TetraSky that is an interesting Idea, in theory I do not see why it would not prevent the issue. Auto run is half the reason you don't just plug a random flash drive into a computer, you get infections that automatically hop all over the place. Plus God knows whats on that USB that you randomly found, not to mention the moral qualms.

OpenBSD is known as being extremely difficult to crack. it hasn't had a security issue in a heck of a long time.
