Yahoo confirms 500 million accounts breached

Nineshadow

Yahoo Inc. on Thursday disclosed a massive security breach by a “state-sponsored actor” affecting at least 500 million users, the latest hurdle for the beaten-down internet company as it works through the sale of its core business.

Yahoo said a copy of certain user account information—including names, email addresses, telephone numbers, dates of birth, hashed passwords and, in some cases, encrypted or unencrypted security questions and answers—was stolen from the company’s network in late 2014 by what it believes is a state-sponsored actor.

ahoo said it is notifying potentially affected users and has taken steps to secure their accounts by invalidating unencrypted security questions and answers so that they cannot be used to access an account and asking potentially affected users to change their passwords.

Yahoo recommended users who haven’t changed their passwords since 2014 do so. It also encouraged users change their password as well as security questions and answers for any other accounts on which they use the same or similar information used for their Yahoo account.

The company, which is working with law enforcement, said the continuing investigation indicates that stolen information didn't include unprotected passwords, payment-card data or bank account information.

In August, a hacker named “Peace” appeared in online forums, offering to sell 200 million of the company’s usernames and passwords for about $1,900 in total. Peace had previously sold data taken from breaches at Myspace and LinkedIn Corp. A Yahoo spokesman said at the time that the company was aware of the claim and was “working to determine the facts.”

Not sure what you mean by google enslaving me. Paypal has not been hacked before. I trust them with my Debit card more than other websites. The more sites you give your CC info the more likely chance you will get unauthorized transactions.

I think is bs, they are doing this to push people to the "Yahoo Account Key" and to collect phone numbers. 500 million passwords stolen on 2014 and they've realized about it just now? Cmon!

Anyway I already change my password again, just in case...

Ellos te sugieren anular tu pregunta y respuesta de seguridad para reestablecer tu cuenta, lo haces y te das cuenta de que ya no puedes configurar una nueva pregunta/respuesta, It's very suspicious to me.

Coincidently this may have been somthing to with our email being hacked and then all our contacts were forwarded a msg saying our family was traped in indian on holiday and all our money and passports were stolen and they needed money deposited deperatly. How did you find out that your account was one of them?

Space Journal #1: So Apparently i  was dropped on the moon like i'm a mars rover, in a matter of hours i have found the transformers on the dark side of the moon. Turns out its not that dark since dem robots are filled with lights, i waved hi to the Russians on the space station, turns out all those stories about space finding humans instead of the other way around is true(soviet Russia joke). They threw me some Heineken beer and I've been sitting staring at the people of this forum and earth since.
