Did I not apply thermal paste properly?

Maihym

So I've noticed that my temps are a little high. I'll run Prime 95 and hit 80 degrees and maybe a little higher. I've applied thermal on my CPU so many times but I can seem to get it right. Am I doing it wrong?

That looks fine.

What are your load temps?

i would apply a little more. im usually pretty generous with my thermal paste and since you have a powerful cpu you will probably need more than i do.

You could apply a little more. About the same size extra but it looks good.

i personally do it in a line so that the spread is more even

I might try doing that because I know most of the heat from the CPU is like a little metal strip under the casing.

yes, now the die is rectangular instead of square. Obviously heat dissipation would try to spread out the heat evenly through out the heat spreader but the part where the die is generally tends to be hotter

What cooler? Prime 95 is known for being a very nasty stress test.

Nah, that's more or less good. The 4790 is just a hot chip. Perhaps set a custom fan profile, or look at a beefier cooler.

The only real, "Tricks" to applying paste are to apply the absolute minimum, and the give the cooler a little twist while applying moderate pressure while installing it. In your case, you need to apply slightly more than what is in the picture, as it won't quite cover the entire heatspreader.

Also, don't P95 haswell chips. Apparently they overvolt due to a specific instruction set which causes them to run hotter, and can potentially damage them.

Maybe a tad more, but certainly seems OK. Dont fret too much on getting the exact shape of the die, it doesn't make that much of a difference (line ,pea, spread out with tape on your finger....).

80° C in prime 95 is not THAT much of a problem, your system in normal usage will should see nothing like the amount of stress Prime 95 applies

80C on P95 is normal. Its pretty good if you are running just 212 Evo and stock settings on CPU. If you manually set voltages, you will get lower temps.
