Should i buy rx480 or gtx 1060 for gaming?

I heard both do well in certain games but one will do better in direct x 12 and vulcan. I'm thinking the rx 480 but i've seen the gtx 1060 outperform the rx480 in certain games. Which should I pick?

playing in 1080p and ill be playing gta, skyrim, a little bit of the witcher 3. I'll assume I will have to lower some settings for the witcher 3. fallout, tombraider

GTX 1060 seems best at a glance. I'd research if those games can/will utilise DX12/Vulcan and if any games you'll be buying in future will. If most of them do, go for an RX 480. Otherwise the GTX 1060 6GB benches slightly higher in most cases.

You think that nvidia will support dx 12 and vulcan later on with the 1060?

DX12 yes. but the RX 480 will be optimised for DX12 and Vulcan

Do you have a monitor right now? if you have one without sync tech, go for the 1060. if you're going to buy a RX480, you should consider a Fressync panel.

If you're deciding between the 480 8GB and 1060 6GB, I think I'd go with the 1060. It should do you nicely for 1080@60. If you're interested in using Crossfire (AMD's marketing term for scan-line interlacing) I'd get the 480 8GB since you can always add a card if you need the extra horses.

GTX 1060 then, those three games simply run better on Nvidia.

I'll consider a freesync monitor since i've been hearing great things about them.  I just dont know which to pick since it's confusing. I guess a factor would be power consumption since im throwing it in a prebuilt i got a while back. It does have a 460watt powersupply. It's an hp branded one and yes i know there will be problems with it because it's not a great supply. Does one have a considerably lower power draw?

What's the spec of your HP prebuilt?

For freesync panel, I recommend 1080p 144Hz Nixeus panel above all but it cuts pretty close with the Asus one. If the AOC one is cheap, you should probably get it. Not much wrong with these panel.

I would go with the GTX 1060 6GB, as GTA V, Witcher 3, and Rise of the Tomb Raider are all games that do better on Nvidia hardware. I'm not sure about which is better for Fallout 4. I would guess Nvidia because it's a very cpu heavy DX11 game, and Nvidia has lower overhead in their DX11 drivers. Either will crush Skyrim.

1060 6GB and RX 480 8GB is damn near a tie but the majority of games are Nvidia optimized so the 1060 will normally gain the lead, but that is not in all cases and you should decide based on the games you play. How ever if you are comparing the 3GB version vs any 4GB RX that is not 460 then I would vote in favor of that because 3GB is not enough...

I bought the 1060 two days ago and it plays everything maxed out.  Nvidia  gets much better support for games, besides, Vulcan/dx12 are still fairly new. By the time games use Vulcan as a standard you may new a new video card anyway.

I think the rx480 if you want to future  poof you pc for year or 2 but if you don't care about that the gtx1060 might run some dx11 gamers better im not 100% sure but rx480 well be better for newer gamers that will run on dx12
