If they go through with removal of the headphone jack, I'm done with them.

 

Sure I might not use the headphone jack on my phone 24/7, but I do use it from time to time, especially when trying to listen to music with speakers that don't have bluetooth, or with decent headphones. (Wireless headphones can GTFO IMO.)

I personally don't care about the headphone jack when there are tons of external dac/amps which are 98% the time far better than whats in your phone anyway. What has me worried though is this propriety connector, thats just pure bs and making me regret getting the note 7 even more :/

I'm not surprised at all. It won't make me not want to buy the phone, if I like and want to get Galaxy S8 next.

Though why proprietary port? Can't everyone just use same USB Type-C like. Or Samsung will I expect?

Considering how quickly gaming drains a battery (modern SoCs are massive hogs under full load), playing on the charger is fully justified, and is certainly no worse for the battery than the rapid drain that is otherwise caused. 

 

Netflix in bed on the charger. Another common use case for both headphones and charger port. 

 

In short, yes, you are the only one thinking one port to rule them all is not a big deal.

I guess USB C would be the way forwards, but it needs the problems ironing out before we all have to own 200 pairs of headphones to use all of our devices

VGA and CD's got replaced because there was an actual alternative that had no disadvantages over previous standards. USB C on the other hand as an audio standard is a mess, and still isn't an alternative.

No, it's USB.

Thunderbolt requires a HUGE controller which would be extremely hard to fit inside a phone. They have gotten smaller since then, but they used to be the size of a full blown USB type A port, and both ends of the chain needed one controller.

Anyway, I will just jump ship if Samsung does away with the 3.5mm headphone jack. When they stopped with removable batteries and SD cards I switched over to LG. What bothers me though are all the ignorant people who are jumping in to defend retarded decisions just because it is a particular brand being retarded. Want me to accept the death of the 3.5mm headphone jack? OK, then develop a standard which has 0 drawbacks. If you want to replace a widely used technology then develop something that is better, not something that is a side-step at best. Isn't the lightning to 3.5mm adapter an active adapter? As in, it has a DAC inside it that just receives the USB signal and converts it into a an analog signal.

I don't think the adapter hooks into the phone's DAC and sends a pure analog signal though the lightning connector.

 

Something that prevents a pure analog signal over USB type C right now is that there isn't anything in the spec for it (from what I know). So any manufacturer implementing analog pass-though would be doing so out of spec, and it might end up being a nightmare compatibility wise.

 

 

What we should aim for though, is analog audio over USB type-C. That would give us almost all of the benefits of 3.5mm, and it would give us all the benefits of a digital connector for headphones that wants to use that.

 

Want a simple design for your headphones that relies on the phone's DAC, or need to use your old headphones? Just use analog over USB type C (or use a passive adapter).

Want to use the extra functionality offered by a digital signal? Then just run USB audio in digital mode.

 

Hell, you could even do a mixed mode where the audio signal is analog, and things like stereo mics (for noise cancellation) could be done over the digital signal.

 

 

The only thing we would use (assuming manufacturers would start adding two USB type C ports) would be the omnidirectional connector. Compatibility would also be a nightmare to start with (because USB type C has so many damn modes and devices right now don't support all of them).

The fuck?? Why is Samsung doing this now?? This makes no sense. The 3.5 jack is a standard we're all used to in our daily lives. Doing this shit fucks up everything, be it convince and/or compatibility.

 

Are we going back in time where different phones used their own different ports?!

 

Glad I don't use iPhones or Samsung phones. Now I will never do.

I actually have no idea, no details on it, I assume that it has a little dac inside the cable - but surelt the phone still has a dac to power the built in speakers? or am I wrong - I have no idea

I assume it has a DAC inside the cable too. If that's the case then the DAC inside the iPhone just sits there doing nothing while you have the adapter plugged in. It's the same with Bluetooth or Lightning headphones. One DAC insdie the phone doing nothing (but that is still needed for things like the speakers), and one inside the headphones.

I dont think anyone cares as long as everything is standardised, having to buy new headphones or an adapter, is one thing

 

having to buy 5 sets of headphones and adapters because Sony, Apple, Samsung, etc all want their own port is insane

 

Im still on the fence whether or not this is all worth it, I mean the dac in the iPhone isnt THAT bad with 3.5mm headphones, certainly its not ear bleedingly awful, and anyone who is serious could already use lightning headphones, an external dac, or a proper audio player/pc etc

I think if the industry can adopt a new standard, it would be a much smoother transition and any audio benefits are greatly welcomed by everyone

2.5mm jacks were ditched because the wires were prone to breaking at the jack very quickly.
