Whatever Microsoft provides with Windows 10.

A big DNS blacklist of hosts.

I don't surf pornography or download 'free' software.

Haven't ever really had much in the way of problems.

Defender is actually quite good and not intrusive

I'm not a complete retard and don't give all programs admin permissons, so the viruses I get are very few and far between.

I just use the standard windows antivirus/firewall, with malwarebites for scanning.  I'm of the opinion that the best virus protection is simply being careful about what you download.  I've been doing this for a long time and I've never had a virus.

Microsoft Security Essentials for Windows 7 does me just fine.

I know how to manually get rid of viruses and malware anyways, but it's actually a pretty decent program. Not as obtrusive as—*shudders*—Norton AV is.

I won't know you're talking to me unless you reply/quote me.

I use the free version of Avast and common sense. I hate how stuff pops up but I find Avast the easiest to use and least intrusive.

What they mean is, Defender is good for a baked-in AV. If you have some common sense it'll get you by just fine. And it's not in your face every 3 seconds or hogging massive resources.

I guess you haven't used Defender lately - nagging you every god damn 1/2 hour it has to scan your PC like it did yesterday

There are ways to make it, y'know, stop doing that. PC Master Race; we can do anything to anything.

I suggest Microsoft Emet and a good network security configuration.  The main thing is protecting your system through access control, UAC, disable Powershell if you're not using it, don't use IIS on a home system, keep Windows Firewall on, use a NAT etc etc.

It's not only programs you don't trust you have to be careful of now, it's becoming more and more common to just exploit trusted software. This is why using something like Emet is critically important.  Most IBM employees who hold sensitive information such as program code use programs from only a special list and use a VPN at all times.  I wouldn't suggest using a VPN at all times, the reason they do is probably just because it's encrypted and natted.

As long as you have a good NAT, use encrypted connections, install and update only trusted software (use Emet too) and have a good firewall that is the foundations.

Of course.. the only way to make sure a program is safe is to actually go on the offense.  #OWASP4LIFE

AV comparatives is great if you are somewhere like Russia where you have more viruses than useful programs.  Honestly, any antivirus that doesn't flat out suck is good.  Windows Defender is good, it's got good integration with Windows security features.  Of course, running a third party antivirus wouldn't hurt as long as it's a good antivirus that is, like Kaspersky, Eset or Sophos.

The simple fact is that if you're careful you won't get a virus.  I've been using windows defender for ages and I haven't ever had one.  If you're doing things that give you a high risk of getting malware then you should get something better though.

go tell this story to people that actually don't have a clue in software protection

historically Windows Defender was, and still is, a joke in terms of threat detection - it can join hands with McAfee and go fuck themselves

thread detection? I take it you meant threat detection.  While I wouldn't expect Defender to find an APT, it's not designed for that, if you think any antivirus is designed to take on an APT you're wrong, you're also wrong if you think they are meant to be what people rely on for protection.

Windows is an OS, an OS is designed for it's own protection.  Zero day protection is built into the OS, my Mom knows nothing about protection and she doesn't use any antivirus besides defender.  Never got a virus, that's for a good reason too, Windows updates updates the signatures, Windows Defender is also efficient and integrates with the OS well.

Go and make a virus, test it out yourself and then come back and say Windows Defender isn't good enough.  Windows 10 has it's built in security mechanisms, and I don't mean Metasploit either, that is as loud as a nuke.  Write your own, if you can't then you are at no place to state 100% that Windows Defender sucks.

Exactly, I mean, antivirus can be good, but it really makes a small difference.  If you're getting something like a toolbar or a Trojan that pretends to be a game, Windows Defender will do just fine, so will any other antivirus. Only 3 places really need an antivirus other than Win Defender:

  1. An Enterprise with lots of endpoints.
  2. A small business which either runs online or if they have a server people upload things to.
  3. A school, university or any other facility where people often use public computers.

Okay.  I just don't tell anyone how much I've been laid, for one I can't remember and for two I just don't care.

But good for you.
