I have always wondered how powerful modern phones are today and could they play some older titles imagine playing masseffect 1 or halo1/2 on the go

Short answer: probably.

 

Long answer: there are some devices such as NVIDIA's Shield Tablet that play Half-Life 2 and Doom 3 BFG, but on the whole, it really depends on the platform and how demanding the game is.

Compute-wise, they've probably surpassed the PS3/Xbox 360 gen, though the memory subsystem continues to be a weakness (limiting use of effects such as shadow maps) alongside the variability of the mobile platform as a whole. In addition, most developers have shown little interest in developing visually complex games for mobile devices.

 

While new/updated, widely available engines (Unreal Engine 4, Unity) are making it easier to push these devices to their limit, there is still the risk of alienating those with weaker devices, and imposing negative effects onto the device that can run the game in the form of high battery drain and heat.

 

Mobile performance has jumped as far as they have partly because manufacturers were pushing the bounds of power consumption in handheld devices (earlier designs pre-2011 were far more conservative).

It's hard to compare directly but here's a general idea. If a generational leap is an order of magnitude jump in raw GPU performance then I'd divide "recent" console hardware into these five categories. Which I've sorted with, in general, the least powerful on the left and the most powerful on the right. Scattered in iPhones and NVidia GPUs. Generally stuff that works on one platform in a group could, in theory, work with other platforms in that group.

 

Mid SD Generation:

DS, Dreamcast, iPhone 4, PSP

 

Late SD Generation:

3DS, PS2, Gamecube, Wii, XBox, iPhone 5, Vita

 

Sub-HD Generation:

Shield Portable, iPhone 6, PS3, 360, iPhone 7 (?), Shield Tablet, Wii U, Shield Console, 260

 

HD Generation:

NX (rumoured), XBOne, PS4, PS4 Pro, 780

 

UHD Generation:
980, Project Scorpio, 1080

 

but even so, the real issue with playing games on phones is not power. It's the fact that they lack buttons

So you get your phone/tablet, make sure it's charged. You also carry around your bluetooth controller which you have also charged. You then put your phone/tablet on a desk or stand or something. Because you need two hands to hold the controller. And even if you can get that far? The developer still developed the game with the person who doesn't have the controller in mind. Because most people don't have the controller.

An iPhone 6s can play GTA San Andreas A OK. So it is more powerful then a computer with an AMD athlon 64X2. I know some androids can run source games fine. CSS and so on. If someone ported the source engine to IOS you could easily play Gmod on the iPhone 6s and 7
