Why does Linus rave about the Razer blade 14" and do you Agree with him?

Hi guys,

Basically I wanted to address why Linus raves so much about the Razerblade 14". He loves it so much that he even gave it his coveted editors choice award. Upon researching more about it on the internet though I found that it has received a lot of criticism. Do you agree with linus? or do you think the Razerblade 14" is a pile of garbage? If you are with one or the other I would like to hear your opinions on the laptop and as to why you think it is good or bad.

Thanks!!

I don't. He claims he honestly loves the products but for the price and failure rates they're sub-par and never addresses that on videos so I don't trust anything he says about Razer.

None of the reviews are based on longevity, they're only based on immediate benchmark performance. Min also sends Linus a bunch of free stuff to get his favor. Linus wouldn't say a product is good because of that, but his views on Razer are generally favorable because he's always given a new laptop and never has the time to see the old one get replaced because it broke down. :P

He'd brush it off as "it happens and they can't guarantee perfect products every time" anyway but still, he really doesn't use them as often as a person who only has a Razer laptop would.

I don't agree with Linus, but i also don't think that it is a pile of junk. I personally think that Razor is the "Apple" of PC. They create decent products, and in my opinion are high quality, but just are not my choice of laptop because of the price. As a customer, i want the best price/performance that i can buy. It just isn't there for the money that you are paying for the Razor Blade. But on the other hand, if you want something that looks aesthetically pleasing, and will perform well AND are willing to pay a little extra money, then go for it. Props to you. Its a nice laptop.

I don't. He does not talk about any of the issues associated with it - heat, QC, support, quality.

Linus doesn't game on that - No heat issues

Linus gets a cherry picked one - No QC, Support, and Quality Issues

No god no. Macs thermal throttle within "reason". Razer try to make their hardware DOA on the start. There are reasons to get a Mac. There is almost no reason to get a Razer Blade.

Nope. It's pretty much all cherry-picked. The unit given to Linus is beyond cherry-picked. The words he gave is also cherry-picked. If you go watch the Sager NP9870 video review linus did right here, the very first thing he says is that his Razer Blade 14 with the 970M thermal throttles and runs hot and loud. It's just he says it about a year after the review where he gave it flying colours is done and dusted; about a year old by that point, so it doesn't matter. The laptop's got its sales already.

Let me be completely clear. Every Razer "laptop" is utter trash. I am not saying cherry-picked, silicon-lottery-winning ones with happenstance great paste jobs and contact don't exist, where they run at acceptable temperatures in most gaming situations, but those are the exception rather than the norm. I do not trust them for everyone purchasing one.

In addition to this, their RAM is soldered. Their GPUs are soldered. Their CPUs are soldered. They don't even have heatsink contact points. It's heatpipes on bare dies. They have to use a "special" paste that's meant for that, rather than flat contact points, which is why "repasting" their laptops (which voids the warranty mind) is generally useless. You might have some luck soldering on a slim copper shim, but I wouldn't buy a fully-soldered $2000+ machine to attempt such a hard mod when I know the fact that I opened it up voids my warranty already.

Also, their maximum storage is a single M.2 slot; no heatsink. This means for any kind of reliable M.2 drive, you're basically limited to 512GB maximum storage. And the one they sell you is unnamed; not guarantee of quality.

I have finally moved to a desktop. Also my guides are outdated as hell.

I knew the CPU and GPU were soldered, but yeah, not that I think about it they really DID have soldered RAM. Also, I coulda sworn they had a 2.5" slot too... but apparently the all-in-one form factor is a sought after design. xD Who knows. :P

Yes, I know. But for a longevity-focused drive, MLC nand is what I want, and recommend. Since I consider OCZ a pointless brand, there are no MLC NAND 1TB M.2 SSDs, NVME or no, that are purchase-able. It's why I specifically said "reliable" (though I know 850 EVOs are pretty reliable in general).

Any Samsung Evo drive was a pile of utter crap and they were SO highly recommended. I view Samsung SSDs like I did OCZ RAM back in the day. Amazing if you get a working pair, but your odds are 1 in 5 for getting a halfway decent product that doesn't die in 1-3 months. :P

The Mushkin Enhanced Reactor SSDs are top notch though. Bought 5 for separate builds. Great SSDs.

Not really - I've been using their products for quite a while and have not had a single issue and neither have my friends - there are a dozen machines running 850 EVOs here - no problems.

I agree. 850 EVO is the to go to SSD. 3D Nand TLC works comparable to low end MLC. So longevity isn't an issue.

Five systems in a row and all five SSDs have died. This year in fact. Two of which I didn't directly build but took my advice based on advice from others of which SSD to get. Now said people don't really trust me about PC parts anymore. As I said, my own experiences come first. I'm steering clear of the 850 Evo.
