Intel Server RAID Config Lost (School Server, HELP)

Is there a flash drive plugged in somewhere? Possibly somebody took it out? Luckily I think you just lost your boot disk (flash drive or one of the disks) and the disks weren't hardware raided. One thing to try is go in to Bios and change the boot priority. Just move through every disk but start with a flash drive if there is one plugged in.

 

Easiest thing to do is download FreeNAS, install it on to a flash drive and boot it up. If those disks were raided via FreeNAS then it will give you the choice to import them. This won't damage anything and will give you a lot of insight (not to mention it won't take more than an hour).

So I'm an assistant for a technology director at a local school where I live. We had bought a barebones Intel server off of Newegg as a remote backup and installed FreeNAS onto it. All the drives were put into a RAID 6 I believe. Over the summer the maintenance crew came in and stored the computer for around a month up on a self with no power. We came back after the summer to get things ready for the coming year and the computer says something along the lines of (NAS device, cannot boot, no boot drive) and all of our drives are now listed separately. Neither of us know fully what we are doing in the area of RAID and server computing. If I could get any help on this it would be much appreciated. This backup server really needs to go into use. I'm gonna post some pictures for background. Any help is needed. If you don't know please bring in people who can help. 

 

Also I may have hit the little ID button pictured below on the front panel. I have no idea what it does and that might have also screwed it up.

I don't believe so anymore. All the drives are showing up as a (Non-RAID) device.

The HDD is plugged directly to the board, no?

Check your controller and see if it's set to RAID. HDD won't work when the controller has been reset back to IDE or ACHI.

Most likely what has happened is the cmos battery ran out and settings have reverted back to defaults. Check your SATA controller mode and make sure it is set correctly, to RAID mode. 

 

Edit: Also suggest replacing the battery so this doesn't happen again.

It seems to me like the system is trying to boot off of the wrong disk - off of a member of the FreeNAS array, instead of the disk FreeNAS is installed to. That drive is normally a USB drive per FreeNAS best practices. Find out what drive FreeNAS was actually installed to, and make sure BIOS is set to boot from that first.

From what I gleaned from this comment and the rest of your comments is that disks are running in hardware RAID 6 provided by the motherboard. Forgetting about the system not booting correctly, which I'll address in a minute, this is a really bad idea. Using hardware RAID prevents Freenas from running proper smart checks on the disks. More importantly it prevents Freenas from running proper parity and data integrity checks which is the headline feature of Freenas. If at all possible (once your sort out the problem with the OS not being found) I would migrate the data on that RAID 6 array to a proper ZFS array configured with Freenas. There are a bunch of tutorials on YouTube that you should be able glean enough information on how to do this.

 

The error message This is a NAS data disk and can not boot system. System halted. means that the disk with Freenas is either missing or corrupt. Basically the message means OS not found. Make sure that the disk or flash drive you installed Freenas to is present in the system and plugged in.

for the second photo that it wont boot because its a nas drive unplug all drives leave the os only . it need to boot once correctly. to the OS . then plug the other drives in . my dell i use to test drives does this same thing if i leave it off for awhile . also check the order of the boot since its useing the wrong drive have the OS in sata 1 or 1/2 if your doing redundant  OS disks. if your useing flash drives place them at the top of the boot list/loader in the bios you want to force it to boot correctly . do this after you get it to boot just the OS

also when your unpluging the other disks unplug anything not needed only a screen mouse/keyboard . take the ethernet out also .

 

for the freenas portion if you plan on doing this again leave it plug'd in but powered down its picky as hell . (if your able to get to work good if not you may need to redo the freenas OS on a new drive , back to the picky part of freenas )

Easiest thing to do is download FreeNAS, install it on to a flash drive and boot it up. If those disks were raided via FreeNAS then it will give you the choice to import them. This won't damage anything and will give you a lot of insight (not to mention it won't take more than an hour).

This ended up being the problem. There was a flash drive in the back of the computer that got unplugged because we didn't know that the OS had been installed on it. We plugged the flash drive back in and it works just as it used to. I ended up moving the flash drive onto the onboard USB port on the motherboard inside the computer that way it is not accidentally unplugged again.

Also just to update some folks on this type of thing...

 

Because freenas would be controlling your raid, in the BIOS you will always see it listed as separate drives. Same for many DIY NAS units, like unraid, etc.

 

The onboard RAID on intel motherboards (available on most consumer PC's) stores the config in BIOS. So, if the battery dies while the computer if unplugged, or the mobo gets fried, etc, RAID config gone.

 

Older RAID cards also worked like this (Esp Dell and IBM) storing the info on flash on the card. If the card died, the array was poof. Hence why many older servers used redundant RAID cards. Funny, using redundant array cards to protect your Redundant Array of Independent Disks. :) 

 

Almost all new "server grade" RAID cards store the information for the entire RAID set on each disk drive in the array. Hence how you can move drives around and everything still works. Note, I do NOT recommend that. :)

 

Finally, a reminder - RAID do NOT equal backups. Even with modern hardware, it it easy for a raid card to fry and wipe all your data. I have seen it, Linus has seen it. :)

Don't forget to backup that critical data.
