Can't decide.. Old parts to build.

I need some help choosing what to do...

I have two oldish machines,

First is:

  • Core2 Duo E8400 (6M Cache, 3.00 GHz, 1333 MHz FSB)
  • 8GB DDR2 Kingston HyperX RAM
  • GIGABYTE GA-EP43C-DS3 Motherboard

Second is:

  • Celeron G1620 (2M Cache, 2.70 Ghz, (cant find FSB for it))
  • 8GB DDR3 Kingston RAM
  • ASRock H61M-DGS Motherboard

Parts for either machine:

  • XFX AMD Radeon HD 7870 Core Edition 1GHz 2GB
  • 250GB Samsung 850EVO SSD
  • 650W PSU
  • Extra money of around £70-80 ($100ish)

The problem I'm having is deciding which machine should I build into a low end gaming machine, I don't intend on playing the latest and greatest games.

So far the combination I thought of was to use the ASRock, DDR3, HD7870 and see if I can find a cheap i7 or i5 online somewhere.

Any help would be great :)

The G1620 is better than the E8400, so go with that one.

You could swap the G1620 for an i5 or i7 later, like you mentioned.

Not sure if I should be going for a 3rd gen or sticking with a high clock speed 2nd gen... (the board only supports 2nd and 3rd gen's)

I would go for a 2nd or 3rd gen i5 as they go for around $100 or maybe a little more on eBay
