Youtube is censoring Youtubers.

SImoHayha

In the latest news. Youtube has changed their TOS and attacking all content creators all around. Apparently Youtube is preventing Monetization for many youtubers, including MrRepzion, Philip DeFranco which they have said is basically a form of censorship.

Apparently many of the videos that are getting "censored" due to the following rules that youtube has created shown in this twitter post. A.K.A "Advertiser friendly "

Many people including Philip DeFranco, thought this was a mistake however when his network manager called Youtube apparently it wasn't.

This is a shitty ass attempt at censorship, what is the point? How is Philip DeFranco suppose to talk about the news? Sugar coat them? No there is a reason why he talks the way he talks, he gives the entire new story and talks about them.  Youtube this is completely ABSURD. What are you thinking!? Your censoring nearly 99% of Youtubers, because I know everyone uses swear words, Pewdiepie probably isn't going to be affected in anyway, cause why? He's the top dog of Youtube.

Youtube has proceeded to shoot itself in the foot, am pretty sure most fans are going to blow this shit up and force youtube to change, cause you know what? That's the only way big companies will submit, if enough noise is created they know clearly they fucked up, really bad and be forced to revert back to the old terms, cause this is non-sense, so basically Youtube is trying to be super politically correct, and it's going to backfire heavily. Youtube is a place where people can post any types of videos ( OKAY MAYBE NOT PORN, KILLING PETS OR ANIMALS ON PURPOSE !  and other crazy shit)

Youtube mate you don fudged up, I hope your prepared for the aftermath of this.

you do still own it, but they have a licence to use it for whatever they want.

If you want your content to stay up, host it your self.

It's within their right to do this, however it is a really dick move. Also, it's dumb as fuck and I can guarantee a competitor with more brains will step up with a replacement for YouTube. Freetube anyone?

unfortunately this is completely within youtube's rights as a private company. they are in complete control over what goes on in their site, regardless of what exerting that control means. It sucks and I'm not in support of this, but this is something that they are totally allowed to do. The only thing that could cause some change is a large enough public outcry/backlash that could cause a pr issue for YT. Hopefully that doesn't need to happen for them to fix this.

With all due respect to the people who got crapped on with this update....

Youtube's rollouts like this are always completely automated, and well known for collateral damage. I doubt anyone physically checked a single flagged video before letting this go live.

I understand that.  But Youtube is essentially censoring, other Youtubers, the idea of Youtube was to share and make videos. Now unless you follow a strict guideline which is basically forcing Youtubers to be censoring themselves and the topics they speak about.

This is true, though that is generally most people's complaint with youtube in the first place, it's automated programs are either stupidly ineffective or completely draconian.

Have you seen the ToS for Google Hangouts?

They are allowed to take anything you put on there and use it however... I wouldn't be wholly surprised if the same went for YT. But I'd have to look. :P

The content has not been taken down, so it's not censorship is it?

Monetization is separate from content censorship. If YouTube's advertisers do not want their money spent on certain videos that is YouTube's rights to do as they please.

Have fun in court.

Public opinion has nothing to do with legality and a court system can't enforce a law that no one listens too, also at this point I think you are just trolling so.....meh no more feeding you.

Sure, they're legally entitled. It basically makes them fucking retarded for chasing out the people who make content for them but sure they can legally tell everyone to fuck off.

But as TJ tweeted Youtube has attempted censorship before, unsuccessfully. At the end of the day advertisers don't really give a fuck who watches their ads and buys their shit as long as people buy their shit. They say they do, but they don't and youtube outta fucking know better than them.

The issue isn't that the videos are being taken down, it's that Google will not monetize them, is that correct?

I freely admit I don't know these Youtubers, but from a cursory glance I think I can see the problem. Advertisers probably don't want their products associated with these videos, and they're either refusing or Google doesn't want to present them to the advertisers in the first place. That's not censorship. Companies have the right to advertise however they wish.

The problem is it would be hard for ANYONE to make something better than YT off the bat because of the kind of computing power it would take to service all of that... Even then, Google Adwords is the biggest internet advertisement service in the world so replacing that is another HUGE issue.
I'd love to see it though.
Maybe we could petition Linus as a community to upload to a third site?

Honestly... I doubt they even really checked or thought about it though. It's like when you get a 20,000 dollar phone bill and talk to your phone company for hours and they still claim there isn't anything wrong.

The most the Youtube rep could have done was go, "wow those lists of titles sound really objectionable", probably wasn't a mistake...

It's a form of censorship. Basically giving Youtubers the giant middle finger from Youtube the very people who make the website a living thriving site.

No, it is not censorship. YouTube is not stopping them from continuing to upload videos, and use the website as a platform for sharing/preserving their content. Monetization is a completely different aspect. You could argue that is lowering their incentive to upload videos, but not censoring them.
