My Nan can drive better than AMD....lel....

EDIT:

The issue has been solved:

The issue was solved by going into AMD Global WattMan, and underclocking the GPU by 10%. All applications are now much more stable, but feel free to read about my frustration below.

This topic is about my issues with my AMD Driver

So....

I bought a Powercolor RX 460 2GB, all was well, it arrived, installed the GPU and the new PSU, installed the driver through Powercolor's website, and pressed play on Overwatch.

I was blown away by the amazing performance, then it hit. Frequent, unpredictable, sporadic, varying crashes.

These crashes don't just occur in Overwatch, but also in other titles aswell.

All settings in the driver are set to not interfere with the application.

Specs

CPU - Core i3 4130 @ 3.4 GHz

GPU - Powercolor RX 460

MOBO - Asus H81M-K

PSU - CiT 400w ATX Power Supply

RAM - 1x Corsair 1333mHz DDR3 4GB, 1x [Unknown Brand] 1600mHz DDR3 4GB downclocked to 1333.

The 3 main types of crash so far

  • Black Screen of DEATH
    • The system will crash, both monitors go black and the PC restarts itself without displaying a Windows restarting screen
  • Unresponsive application
    • The application will freeze, but may sometimes still play sound, but only render as a black screen. Tabbing out varies as sometimes I can, sometimes I can't
  • BSOD
    • Only bluescreened once or twice, the BSOD features the error to do with "atikmdag.sys"

All of these events and trials combined have lead me to believe that the issue lies with the AMD driver, version 16.8.2.

3dMark Sky Diver benchmark runs fine, with no crashes.

I've tried using the TDR fix in the registries, both at 8 and 10, but still crashes occur.

If you have any questions related to this topic, want to help, or are having the same issue, make yourself known!

All help is appreciated

Kind Regards,

-Luithian

Use DDU to uninstall drivers (boot into safe mode first, like the program says) then install the latest from the AMD website (or the drivers before 16.8.2 whatever they were)

I've done this, multiple times, but to no avail. Some sites say that it is due to a faulty PSU, which is probably not the case as my PSU is brand new.

EDIT:

The RX 460 is relatively new, so it could take a while for bugs to be patched.

No OC at all, CPU isn't overclockable either.

If it turns black and restarts itself ( does things u dont want to) its maybe a virus...

So maybe too much Amy Anderssen? or Alexis Texas?

When it turns black, I have to manually restart it, but the application just freezes and I can't tab out, also my anti-virus is pretty good, and I've never had a virus.

I wouldn't trust that (piece of shit) at all.

True, but it was either this for £17.99 or another one for £9.99

I'm thinking that, but everything I've experienced so far points to the AMD Driver, I can swap my old 250w PSU back in but this would be a risk as the minimum PSU recommendation is 400w.

Yep sounds like you went too cheap on the power supply

Or you know, you could save up for an actual 450W PSU like the CX450M (the Antec Earthwatts Green 380W is also good too) because that CiT thing is labelled as a 400W PSU but it's probably only 200W.

What points to the AMD driver? This kind of instability is more likely to be caused by the PSU feeding unclean power full of spikes to you GPU.

Do yourself a favour and buy this

If problems persist once you've got a real PSU, I would contact PowerColor to see what they have to say.
