Samsung is recalling the Galaxy Note7 over battery fire hazard, sales halted

patrick3027

It's your boy patrick3027 back at ya with another story about the Samsung Galaxy Note 7

Quote

Samsung Electronics has suspended shipments of the Galaxy Note 7 to various South Korean mobile telecoms over a series of reports of Note 7 units exploding while being charged. Deliveries of Samsung's flagship phablet have been halted earlier this week, according to South Korea's Yonhap News Agency (YNA).

[...]

Our experience with the Galaxy Note 7 took a sharp turn for the worse after just a few days of regular use. Our brand new unit has fallen victim to a strange software bug that has rendered it basically unusable, due to frequent random crashes that send the device into a bootloop. See:

[...]

Speaking to the YNA, a Samsung rep has declined to confirm or deny that Note 7 shipments were suspended, saying that “we are checking whether the deliveries were halted or not“. South Korea's SK Telecom Co., KT Corp. and LG Uplus Corp carriers have stopped receiving Note 7 units earlier this week, according to officials at the telecoms, cited by the YNA.

I gotta admit, I love reporting this kind of news

UPDATE 1: Samsung now confirms that shipments of the Galaxy Note 7 are halted for additional tests

Quote

"Shipments of the Galaxy Note 7 are being delayed due to additional tests being conducted for product quality," Samsung said in a statement to Reuters. The firm did not elaborate on what it is testing and to what markets shipments are being delayed.

Local media reports have said some users of the Galaxy Note 7, which launched in South Korea and other markets earlier this month, have claimed that the battery for their phones exploded.

UPDATE 2 It's official: Samsung is recalling the Galaxy Note7 over battery fire hazard, sales halted

While Samsung designed the battery cell, it outsourced the manufacturing to other companies and one of those factories is to blame for the faulty battery.

As of Sept. 1, a total of 35 claims were registered with Samsung's service centers at home and abroad. Only 24 units on a scale of 1 million were affected by the battery problem.

At least now if you're in an emergency survival situation and you need some fire but all you have is your phone and a battery pack you can make some fire out of it am I right?

It's not like you would need that phone for important radio transmissions or anything to try to get someone to save you instead of making a fire, right?...

I love computer hardware and feel free to ask me anything about that (or phones). I especially like SSDs. But please do not ask me anything about Networking, programming, command line stuff, or any relatively hard software stuff. I know next to nothing about that.

Okay, alright. I gripe about samsung phones a lot. I mostly didnt care for their software interfering with MS exchange, so I decommissioned them from the company I work for. And the screens always got burn in regardless of generation.

But this? Completely insane. Not even sure what to comment.

I am wondering; does this specific issue have anything to do with the lazy certification of USB type-C cables?

My guess would be the USB type B to type C converter bundled with the phone.

Boom goes the battery, yeah that would cause some serious burns. Sucks =/

But hey, new type of batteries are coming that are not dangerous and are more lasting, yeah. Maybe we actually see new types...

https://www.usbkill.com/ next thing you know, these guys will be making "USB-C killing cable" :p! At least it just destroys the cpu, motherboard (apparently those with ESD shielding are A-Ok) and whatnot and doesnt explode the device?

It's just a guess, the type C cable could just as well be the culprit. My reasoning was that they probably tested the USB type C cable thoroughly and the the converter might just have been an afterthought.

Let's hope they release an official statement soon.

Meanwhile, the only thing you can do is avoiding to obstruct the airflow when charging (putting it underneath a pillow is a bad idea) and avoid charging it in direct sunlight.

I also edited the OP, given Samsung now confirms that shipments of the Galaxy Note 7 are halted for additional tests.
