Crazy remote location gaming internet solution... that just might work!

Ok so I have found myself in the middle of a national grassland and the only two options for internet out here are A. Satellite, or B. Cellular data.

 

I have a plan to turn my Raspberry Pi into a router,  then use it to play games on over the internet. I just have a few questions.

1. Will the raspberry Pi have enough power to function as a router?

Plenty of power. Considering the WRT54G has potatoe specs and easily handles 5 devices. Though it is showing age now with lots of phones on it tends to lag. But some OCing solves that.

Just keeping this here as a the dongle supports 4G LTE AWS and Band 17 which is what ATT use.  as far as putting your phone sim in it and only using data... ATT might flag it on there network and require you to get a data only plan sim to use with the dongle. but if anything you can try it and just say you were playing around with a new toy...

I did this last month when I spent 7 days in a place where only 3G was available. Since I have a contract with a local telecom provider, I got a Huawei E153 3G dongle I think. For the router I used a Raspberry Pi 1 model B and OpenWRT. It performs great as a router, I had some issues setting up the 3G dongle. If you plan on setting up wifi as well, make sure you get a powerful wifi dongle, I used a TL-WM720N, and it sucked. One device maybe two, and it's dropping in performance a lot. Though you should probably remove "gaming" as the latency won't be near what you are used to on a home connection.

Alrighty I'll give it a shot, maybe go up to the ATT store and have THEM put a sim card in it.
