GTX 950/960 but i would wait for GTX 1050 if you can even though that might be a bit much GPU for that nearly 10 years old processor...but it should retail for around 140$ or something so why not...

RX 470 is overkill for that old processor and RX 460 is pretty weak for the price...also nvidia drivers are much more efficient CPU wise so for an old CPU like that nvidia GPU's are much better suited.

Depends on the game, and well I am confident he can do fine with RX 470 because many use Q6600 with a R9 290! :)

Depends on the game, and well I am confident he can do fine with RX 470 because many use Q6600 with a R9 290! :)

that's an INSANE bottleneck...i used to run my Q6600 @ 3.6ghz (+50% overclock) and i had it paired with an HD7950 and the CPU wasn't able to keep up with the graphics card at 1920x1080.

well they are wrong, here even the FX-4300 is nearly twice as fast as that Q6600 CPU that turned 10 years old this year:

http://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Core2-Quad-Q6600-vs-AMD-FX-4300/1980vs2879

That CPU is litteraly a legacy part at this point...you have to temper your expectations.

I know it is not really as good as the FX but it should handle a RX 470 just fine in most games, unless it is GTA V or worse! :D

I know it is not really as good as the FX but it should handle a RX 470 just fine in most games, unless it is GTA V or worse! :D

nahh it's way slow...the RX470 perform like an R9 390 or something right?! and i'm telling you...honest to god...that,s way much GPU for that old processor...unless you plan to do 2560x1440 or 4K at 30FPS or somehting...and even then, that CPU can barely sustain a 30FPS rendering in many AAA titles...otherwise i would still be using it ;)

yes...or GTX 960/770/680 or GTX 1050 when it comes out (which is ultimately what i would recommend if he can wait for it a little bit)

HD7950/7970 or R9 280/280X/285 worth checking out as well especially on used cards.

Also many on this forum claim the Q6600 is better than any FX CPU... o3o

The people making that comparison are confused. The two share a similar IPC, but FX CPUs clock higher and are on a more modern platform. @i_build_nanosuits
