The msi 970 is already overclocked out of the box, is there a point overclock it more? how much more fps will i see from overclocking?

Depends. My 980ti boosts to 1356mhz out of the box but I can get it to 1586mhz which I get a solid 20+ more FPS. Just go until it isn't stable. Usually boost clocks are pretty low

The 970 like the 1070 has the most overclocking headroom of any cards of their respective generations. It would be a waste of money not to overclock! You will see large gains in performance from overclocking. Mine reaches 1580 on the core and +500 on the memory with stock voltage. Granted you're never guaranteed any overclock but you have the best chance of a good overclock with a 970 (except cards like the EVGA 970 SC).

Idk just look up how to overclock a 970 on Youtube. It's really easy. Also don't be afraid to increase the voltage to get it stable. Just don't flash the BIOS unless you know 100% what you are doing.

I have quite a lot of experience considering oc-ing the MSI 970 (I had two of those in SLI) Your OC is alright, you could try to go a little further, just watch out for artefacts and make sure your oc is stable. (try different benchmarks, normally 20 mins each in heaven, valley and fur mark should be enough). I managed to get one card to 1500/3800 and one even to 1550/4000 - I think that's what you should be going for. 

Considering Afterburner, just tick the "Start Afterburner with Windows" option in the settings menu, you shouldn't run into problems as soon as you have done this, I don't know if the oc still apply when you close Afterburner, but you could search that if you mean to. (http://lmgtfy.com/?q=afterburner+open+to+apply+overclock)

Glad to know my numbers came out decent, i had higher memory clock set in heaven benchmark but it was abit unstable while running rise of tomb raider and i crashed 20mins in so to be safe i backed down abit. I probably could of squeeze abit more if i increase voltage but for now ima leave it off.

Alright man, you should already be at about +10% score compared to the base clock anyways.

 

Little tip: The actual clocks are higher than Afterburner displays (it is just "points", not MHz) Look at the frequency Heaven displays for your GPU, when you're at about 1650MHz for the core, you should be fine.

yea i noticed that too, in heaven benchmark it was around 1650mhz but afterburner displayed 1490mhz. I guess im all set now, btw how much more performance will i get if i increase voltage? will it outweigh the risk?

I wouldn't do it if I were you. Your card should be running at about 75°C already, that is a respectable Temperature for a 10% increased performance OC. You wouldn't get more than 1-2 frames in a demanding game anyways. Just leave it as it is, you have done your job ;)

My temp right now is stable around 67-69c with rise of tomb raider, 65c with witcher 3. OC is alot easier than i thought it would be lol. Makes me think about ocing my 5820k

Yea, with the help of tools like Afterburner it certainly is. If you were to use e.g. Precision X and going for max OC, things would be a little more complicated, but just squeezing out a few % of additional performance is normally no problem whatsoever. That's what high-end air cooled cards are built for today.

He should only start with Windows when it is stable. If he turns k boost on then he has a bigger problem when he can't boot

I get around 56°C at 1580 mhz. The MSI cooler is just about as good as the Windforce so I think he can push it farther. It's worth it too because I see performance gains about 5-9 fps going from stock gpu boost ~1490 to my current OC.

Alright, looks like your fan curve is set a little bit higher than mine was, anyways, go for it if you want to - just be careful not to overdo it, give small boosts to the voltage and do it slowly and accurately. You always have the chances of damaging something.

It's at the stock fan speed and stock voltage. But yeah it's best to keep the voltage as low as possible.

So i have problems with afterburner where it doesnt automatically load into oc profile i saved even when i have startup checked :( any ideas? it sucks having to manually load profile manually each time.
