Trying to Build a Gaming PC -- Total Noob

Hi. I'm trying to build a gaming PC (which I've never done before). My budget is around $1000. This is the build I've got right now. I did not make it, because I'm a noob. I got it off a YouTube video. What do you guys think? I want to play the latest titles as well as older ones like Assassin's Creed. MMOs as well, like WoW. Would 1440p be fine or 1080p? I would be extremely grateful for any help with the build.

CPU: Intel Core i5-6600 3.3GHz Quad-Core Processor  ($213.98 @ NCIX US)
CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler  ($24.88 @ OutletPC)
Motherboard: MSI B150M BAZOOKA Micro ATX LGA1151 Motherboard  ($84.88 @ OutletPC)
Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws 4 series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-2400 Memory  ($67.99 @ Newegg)
Storage: OCZ TRION 150 240GB 2.5" Solid State Drive  ($59.99 @ Newegg)
Storage: Seagate Barracuda 2TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive  ($61.00 @ Amazon)
Video Card: Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1070 8GB G1 Gaming Video Card  ($428.89 @ OutletPC)
Case: NZXT S340 (White) ATX Mid Tower Case  ($64.69 @ SuperBiiz)
Power Supply: EVGA SuperNOVA NEX 650W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply  ($79.99 @ SuperBiiz)

Thanks in advance. I live in Japan, but US prices and stuff should be fine, I'll just take care of those things later.

If you want bare minimum 1440p, don't get this. It's too OP.

But if you want medium-high setting 1440p performance, just go with it. It won't hurt anybody if you buy it. Only thing I would recommend is getting Z170 instead of B150 so you can upgrade to an unlocked CPU later

Looks pretty solid. If you wanted to have the option to upgrade to an overclockable cpu later try a z170 motherboard instead of the b150. Hard to say its good value without using pcpartpicker

not the NEX unless its MUCH cheaper than any other unit you can find. get any Seasonic/superflower(unless your place has lots of brownouts, then avoid the leadex gold)/XFX non-XT/EVGA supernova non-NEX instead.

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5600X Heatsink: Gelid Phantom Black GPU: Palit RTX 3060 Ti Dual RAM: Corsair DDR4 2x8GB 3000Mhz mobo: Asus X570-P case: Fractal Design Define C PSU: Superflower Leadex Gold 650W

Thanks a lot. I changed the motherboard, but since I'm completely new to this, I don't really understand the differences between different ones too well. I mean, I understand important, large differences, but that's about it.

Here's what I got: http://pcpartpicker.com/list/pQdbKZ

As for the power supply -- I'm sorry, I don't understand what @herman mcpootis said. I understand the one in the build I had wasn't good, but I don't understand why. Could you please tell me which would would be better?

Thanks a lot, and sorry for asking so many questions.

The evga supernova NEX doesn't perform very well compared to other power supplies for the same price or less.

Aright, but what do you mean by performance in this context? Do you know any alternatives that would perform better?

The power supply you selected comes in different flavors. You could get the exact same power supply with the same wattage. The differences he is loosely referencing can be many electrical engineering things I don’t quite understand, but yo put it simply it is quality and efficiency. You can get a 80+ bronze, silver, gold, and up. These are just efficiency ratings, how much more or less efficient the power supply converts volts to watts.

Also, specifically relating to what you asked, the evga supernova NEX is the worst of the 3 ‘models’ they make in that line. There is the EVGA supernova NEX, GS, and G2, sometimes P2 for the higher power supplies.

G2 Supernovas are the most desirable and everyone on the forums will say, “Hey I love your power supply.” At the end of the day I was in the same boat, but went with a GS supernova. They are really decent.

I was just like you when I started out. I don’t know anywhere near as much as others, but I will do everything to help man!

That build you posted is very solid. I have about 1,100 in my system and I still plan on buying a HDD and a gtx 1070.

Im not sure about why not that power supply but id reccomend a rm550x or rm650x psu they are very good quality. Also if you can throw lil xtra into your cpu getting a i7 6600k wouldnt be a silly idea for overclock ability to avoid the hassle if later you relise you actualy want to overclock :)

and fyi the h110, b150 and h170 motherboars do not support overclocking , only the z170 board supports overclocking. When it comes to cpu's only "k" sku cpus are overclockable. so an i5 6600 is not overclockable even on a z170 board but the i7 6600k is.

Budget is everything.  It is hard to get the best performance with your money if we don't know how much the products cost where you live.

That said... That PC you have here is great for 1440p.

The Hyper 212 is loud, BeQuiet! Pure Rock or the Cryorig H7 is a better choice.

You can go with a cheaper H110 motherboard and suffer no performance loss at all.

Cheapest 2133MHz RAM you can find, preferably GSkill.

The NEX has some lower quality components inside.  Over time, those components will degrade and that will result in lower total wattage output for your PC.

Ohh, thanks so much for that detailed response.

I'm buying the parts in the US so the prices are fine in USD.

Your comparative build is cheaper than the one I initially had. What differences there be in gaming performance, for example.

Again, thanks a lot, and sorry for asking so much.

There is a tiny amount of CPU performance difference between the 6500 and the 6600.  3.6GHz boost on the 6500, to 3.9GHz boost for the 6600.  Other than that, they will be similar.

There is more to the NEX PSU, but I did not want to bog you down with too much information and I don't really know THAT much either.  To keep it short:  The NEX will perform worse when you begin to ask it to give you more and more juice.  Good units with better internal components are available for less money and will perform better than the NEX when you stress them.

...and you are welcome.  Keep the questions coming.  ;):D

Hey guys! my first time in the forum and looking for some advice, what do you think of this parts I've put together for my first gaming desktop?

- The image is a screen cap it took from my hardware online store, it lacks an ssd that I already have so I won't buy another one.

All the help you can give is welcome, see you!

Again, thanks. And since you said you're okay with questions, I'm going to take you up on the offer. I don't quite get what a 0.3GHz difference would do (or whatever the difference is -- I'm worse at math than I am at tech xD). What would be the difference, you think, in like gaming performance. Use noob language, please ??????. I understand fps and settings and stuff like medium and high etc,

In certain situations, like when a game only uses one core, the 6600 will be up to 8% faster than the 6500... only some of the time.

The i5-6500 CPU has s better price to performance. Or, for just a bit more than the i5-6600, you could get the i5- 6600k and a Z170 motherboard for some nice overclocking. Check out Linus' video on it:

Get some fast RAM to go with all that CPU power.  Thes cost is like $10 more for 3000MHz RAM.

The BeQuiet Pure Rock is quieter than the Hyper 212 EVO and performs just as well.  The Cryorig H7 is quieter as well, cools well, and looks good too.  The H7 has gone up in price recently, IDK why... maybe availability.  All should be around $30-$35 USD.

You will want two 140mm fans for the front intake.  One is okay, but two is better.

Rosewill Capstone PSUs used to be really good, but they changed their manufacturing.  They are not that good any more.

XFX TS/PRO units are good, not the XT.  Made by Seasonic.

EVGA has the B2/G2/P2 made by Superflower and the GS/PS made by Seasonic.  Those are good to look into.

Just about anything Seasonic or Superflower will be well made.  The M12ii 520W will provide all the power you need and comes in fully modular and non-modular.  The fully modular is $65.

Hi

Again, thanks a lot. I should have looked at my build more carefully. I thought I had based it on the one you showed me before, but it turns out I was mistaken. Sorry! m(_ _)m

Here's what I have now: http://pcpartpicker.com/list/xzm3yf

The only thing I don't understand is the bit about memory. What would be better?

I was suggested this motherboard that I have now, but do you think I can go for a cheaper one?

Again, sorry for asking too much. m(_ _)m
