Keep my old PSU or get a new one?

Go to solution Solved by BurstSMG,

holy crap, 1100w? Keep that motherf****r for SLI

edit: give it to me

I'm replacing some parts in my old pc to be able to sell it. It has what appears to be a Dell R622G 1100W PSU which is 80+ Silver. It could be up to 7 years old (bought the pc used) and the inside of the computer was never cleaned so there might be a lot of dust in the PSU although it does not have a fan itself. So should I replace because it's so old (and ugly) and potentially filled with dust or would it be fine for a 300W-400W PC.

Forgot to mention the inside of the computer was never cleaned so the PSU might be filled with dust.

Doesn't matter, take the cover off and spray it with whatever TechYesCity uses to clean the crap he buys. Look up "techyescity cleaning spray"

Well this build is only going to have something like a rx 460 since the CPU is an i7-960 so I'm guessing I should get a new one for this and save the 1100w for something more powerful.

If you have 1100w, use the 1100w. Any amount of wattage headroom just makes a computer more stable in the long run

Could be a Fire Hazard....

Dell may not use Name Brand, but they likely wouldn't use something that could catch fire as that would be very detrimental to their business. Most of their PSU's are non-branded Deltas or Seasonics.

As long as his electric is grounded, it's very unlikely his psu will burn down his house.  They go out with a pop sometimes, but those dell PSUs are better than you think.  Schools are full of em after all.

To answer your question: Remove the grate from the PSU and use some compressed air to get rid of the dust. After that reinstall the grate and continue computing.

I wish he had switched the PSU, that would mean I would know the most intelligent man on earth. Seriously I must have taken of 50 screws and so many pieces of the case and I still can't get the thing out.
