i5 2500K w/ GTX 970 good for 2016 gaming?

I saw a discussion on this, but it did not meet my answer. 

I play games such as CS:GO, Battlefield 4 (and 1 in the future), World of Tanks, DayZ and Miscreated (maybe GTA in the future) I'd like to play these games with medium settings and I guess I could settle for average and at least have 70-100fps. Looking at the 2500K since its affordable on eBay, but I thought I'd ask if it would meet my standards? Thanks!

Yup.

 

OC it though it will increase the upper limit for framerates

What is your budget? Why not go for newer gen intel?

in csgo, you dont need the best settings. Pros use low settings for better visuals, and uses lower resolutions as well. CS:GO still uses HL2 engine, so you can still have good fps with budget gaming.

 

BF4... yeah, that game uses multicore. so i5-4400 or higher would be better choice.

Don't both have 4 cores, 4 threads? I'm fairly certain a i5 2500k (EXPECIALLY when oc'd) would beat out a i5 4400.

i5 2500K pushed to 4.8 - 5.0GHz would be a good bit faster than the i5 4400 i imagine. 

 

That clock isn't even hard to achieve either.

(FPS variance is always a thing,.. happening constantly (however how big/small depends on many factors,..and bad PC ports exist)

But...I Hardly to Never in most games,...experienced GPU usage or Performance problems with my i5 4690 3.7-3.9Ghz when Loaded., with my G1 970 @ 1380-1450Mhz, if thats any comparison.. (PM me if you want a youtube playlist of my i5 with a 290 and a 970, to compare)

Sure, I may be a few FPS less than the big boys with higher IPC/Cores/Threads, but the GTX970 is no slouch, neither is the 2500K (Esp OCd@ 4.5-4.6+)

To which a nicely OC'd 2500K would be very similar in regards to my system, when your 'mainly' in GPU-bound gaming scenarios, the only real gametype that screws you in performance, is a badly made PORT, or something like that... even my i5 @ 90-95% in AC-Unity or Witcher3, still has the GTX970 pumping ample frames above acceptable for the less than a second dips that may occur in such situations of extreme CPU load, If thats the Nvidia driver at work, all good, but I've seen Ext-High CPU load, and my GPU usage is still in the 90%'s.

Where you need a bit more brute force,PC ports,.. but other than that, I severely doubt the machine will have any issues with any games on a balanced well kept system.

A 2500k and 970 pairing is fairly common. The guy who owned my 2500k before me had that pairing but swapped them out when he went to a 980ti and 6700k (GPU and CPU went to different places).

 

My 2500k OC to 4.2 GHz is about 20% more powerful than a 4400 on average. The only real reason to consider the 4400 would be the newer (but still obsolete) chipset that would support a further upgrade in the future.

 

4.3 to 4.6 GHz seems to be average for 2500k overclocks.

I own a 2500k (running at 4.5) 16GB ram and a 970. I play all my games at 1080p on Ultra or High, buttery smooth performance in 99% of games. Looking at your list of games I get the following
CSGO: Max everything runs at silly FPS, will not be a problem at all
BF4/BF1 Beta: Mix of High and Ultra runs around 80 fps, some slight slowdown in very busy scenes but no issues at all in playability.

DayZ: Havent played for ages but game was very playable on High settings (you may need to tweak some of the settings to your preference), but you will have no issues.

GTA: Game is quite CPU dependant but you will be fine playing on High

This is i7 comparison but you can see how the newer cpu scales

 

 

At the end of the day it all depends on your budget, if you can get the new CPU, if not the 2500k (if you overclock) will last you at least a year and a half, depending on what you play and the settings.

I have maybe the biggest lemon of a 970 on LTT and I still get 80-90 fps at 1080p ultra on Battlefield 1, so gpu wise you should be fine with a 970. If you go for an old cpu like a 2500k, be warned that motherboard prices can get pretty expensive. So you might not save a whole lot of money going Sandy Bridge instead of Skylake. Also I'd only buy a 970 if I got a really great deal on it considering you can buy a 1060 6GB brand new for $250.
