Worst medical condition you've ever had?

Recommended Posts

Posted · Original PosterOP

Hey there,

before I start this thread is no way intended to be intrusive, rude or harassment, its a curiosity of mine, and I'd love to hear of others experiences (if they want to share)

So simply put, what is the worst medical condition you've ever had? This can be injuries, health conditions, surgeries etc.

I will start, so I have (had) two "major" medical problems, with my first, and most annoying being Acne, no not the stereotypical, oh I have a few blackheads or spots, I mean I have 100-150 spots at any given time, and 70% of my shoulder is now scar tissue, so basically since I was 13 (3 years ago) I developed a problem with Acne (my hormones are practically screwed) and it has constantly developed, even under medical "treatment" - One of which made me sick 5 minutes after taking the medicine, I've also had private specialist work done to try and remove any damaged hormones etc, but nothing worked, so now, the entire of my upper back, both shoulders, and left side of my chest is covered in Acne, as well as my face, and side of my right leg, so yeah, not a painful problem, but an annoying and "off putting" condition, although I still have a girlfriend and I'm ugly with acne :D

Second one was when I was 9, I had a trampoline and me and my friend used to pretend wrestle on it, and one day I slipped over and fell off of the trampoline, but I didn't.... My arm had caught under the safety thing over the springs, and gone interloped inbetween 3 of the springs, from the weight of my body falling, it snapped my bone in 3 places, and I had to undergo 4 hour surgery, and had pins in my arm for 8 Weeks :D Incredibly painful, and especially for me at the age of 9, considering I hate needles.

So simply, if you want to share, what is your worst medical condition you've had?

i've had an ingrown toenail on one nail for about 2 years. incredibly painful, had to clean the pus off and the blood. it was super nasty. and the other one is acne, but it's pretty well managed, with some blackheads near my nose and some pimples here and there.

Ulnar nerve entrapment in my right elbow. Didn't help much it got misdiagnosed and I had to suffer for two years because of it. Sometimes it got to the point where doing mundane things like opening up a door or using a fork and knife was painful. The end result was that I needed surgery to fix it.

yeah okay, I could see that being painful as hell, was the recovery time long?

I'm still recovering. Nearly two years after the operation.

At this point I'm convinced my right arm will be crippled for the rest of my life. I can still use it, but movement is impaired.

Damn, that really sucks, is that purely because of the miss diagnosis or is it just not a injury/condition that is easy to recover from?

It's a long story, but the nerves in my right arm are bad.

Had scoliosis throughout puberty. Eventually got to the point where the curve in my spine was approaching 45 degrees. Had corrective back surgery and 2 titanium rods implanted and now my worst side effect is my perfect posture.

Besides that I have hypoactive throidism. Meaning my thyroid doesn't produce an appropriate amount of thyroxin compared to the amount of thyroid stimulating hormone produced by the pituitary gland.

Overall I consider myself pretty lucky to not have anything much more serious than that.

I forget what the condition was called but basic part of my immune system got "confused" and started attacking the small blood vessels under my skin.  At first it just made me feel sore like after you work out really hard, but after a few day it became severely painful and my skin look really aweful (under the skin cause of all the blood). It was at this point after waking up and you could see there was something wrong visual that I went to the hospital (basicly was bearable pain wise and couldn't see it then when I woke up it was extermely painful and you could see it).  The doctor was quick to diagnosis what it was, unfortunately there was nothing they could to to stop it I had you wait till it went away by itself which took about a week.

My left lung nearly died and killed me with it with pneumonia once.

Woke up, couldnt breathe, intense pain in left lung, coughing blood.

Booked a same day A&E appointment, x rayed, ZOMG LUNG INFECTION, got anti biotics and anti inflamatory drugs.

Also couldnt sleep for a few days because it made my back too painful to lie on.

I've had Hodgkins Lymphoma. I felt a swollen node on my neck one day, it didn't go away with anti-biotics, and then biopsy, node removal, and finally five months of treatment.

Alright....here we go.

The first one was having a major growth spurt when I was about 8 years old and I developed a huge hollow spot in my upper right arm.  Snapped the bone 2 inches below the socket when I threw a snowball.  4 surgeries later with 2 metal plates and 17 screws I was fixed up.

Second is the loss of a knuckle on my right index finger.  I have several salt water aquariums in my house and one imparticular that is a No No tank.  I have an 8 inch long Peacock Mantis Shrimp in there.  Well...I was cleaning his tank and on accident...I knocked over a piece of live rock in front of his main entrance.  Well...without thinking I just reached down and grabbed the rock...and he came out swinging.  One perfect shot and he hit the first joint on my index finger (the one closest to the nail) and shattered it to dust.  Had to go to the ER and they had to completely remove what was left.  So my right index finger is about a quarter inch shorter than my left.

I have psoriasis as well as a sun allergy, both on certain parts of my body. My chest and thighs have ugly—yet totally harmless red splotches. And my arms and torso have a reaction to sunlight, so ever since I was the age of 10~, I've never set foot outside without some sort of long-sleeve attire. It's been so long I can't even wear a t-shirt casually around the house without feeling naked. It makes working much harder for me, since I need to be wearing long sleeves, and I was never good at handling heat to begin with. I've had to pass up on jobs because of it, and that sucks some major shit.

My worst condition...

Eye surgery ... have a somewhat genetic condition slightly accelerated by getting hit in the face with a football when I was a kid. Basically the cornea of one of my eyes got deformed with time to the point where i got headaches trying to read texts from monitors and books (other eye and brain would try to correct the "stereo" information coming from my eyes and fail) and i would also get headaches if there was too much sun outside (from bright light reflected on light gray cement or directly in my eyes)

The medical term is Keratoconus and the fix was to basically insert a very thin plastic ring in the kornea to stretch it / flatten it and bring it back to a somewhat correct shape. Still can't see quite well with the affected eye, but the other one works perfectly and the brain uses that to correct everything and i can see everything without any problems.

At my degree of deformation, the only other solution would have been to do a cornea transplant from a human donor.

The surgery is a bit like in Dead Space and it's scarier to think about it than in reality .. no needles, no anesthesia, just a kind of gel applied over the eye to paralyze the nerves for a about 30 minutes and then the surgeon uses a sharp blade to make an incision and then with a special tool that plastic ring is inserted inside the cornea. Then about 2 days with a bandage over that eye to prevent infection and other crap.

Kinda nsfw video  (nothing bloody or horrible but can be scary for some)

Appendicitis, while on vacation, had to get surgery and then we had to leave vacation early. But luckily we just left our campground in the mountains, if we were still there I probably would have to have been airlifted from the campground due to the remote location. I get sick on every vacation :/
