AMD pulls Vega forward to October

According to many sites out there and some hints from AMD themselves, we will get Vega not in early 2017, but possibly in October of this year. According to AmigoBulls,

It looks like AMD (NSDQ:AMD) is making headlines again. A senior director of the chipmaker revealed on Facebook yesterday that they’re readying up a venue to launch their next-gen high-performance Vega line of GPUs. Although the exact timeline wasn’t revealed, industry experts believe that the launch event could take place sometime in October this year. The GPUs were earlier scheduled for release in early 2017, so that’s a significant advancing of the launch, especially considering that AMD operates in a cut-throat, time and resource sensitive semiconductor industry. Let’s take a look at the prospects of this development

If AMD followed through with this there would be a large stock boost for the red team, and more gpu shares in the market, which would help AMD out quite a bit in their current situation. In addition, they could have Navi come out sooner rather then later with Vega moving forward from its date. IMO, this would be awesome to see, especially if they stood up to the GTX 1080 for a cheaper price.

Vega only has to edge out the 1080 by 5% for me to consider it a win. 

 

I hope that's true. AMD and RTG has done really well with some key products in my opinion. Back on track!

After seeing Nvidia stealing code if Vega is the same as 1080 I would be happy.

This image is official, from AMD. Take note of the specific type of games which qualify each tier of card as being fit for its respective marketed resolution: DOTA 2, LoL, etc.

 

AMD lists the RX 470 and RX 480 as being 1440p cards, in games such as DOTA 2 and LoL. AMD uses the same standard of DOTA 2 and LoL to call the RX 490 (which is the upcoming Vega card) as a 4K card.

 

The RX 470 and RX 480 cards are obviously not 1440p cards for general gaming, and also require toning down graphics settings in many games at 1080p. Since the RX 490 is being measured by the same qualification as those cards, it's already predictable right now that the RX 490 will at best be a decent 1440p card, though it will likely still require graphics settings to be toned down in 1440p in many games, just as is the case with the RX 470 and RX 480 in many games at 1080p.

 

Also, AMD has said that they didn't invest much effort into researching big GPU advancements in the past many years, because they expected high-performance gaming to phase out, which is why the RX 480 was so underwhelming. Well, Vega was designed with the same mindset, and Vega's design was finalized around the time that the GTX 1070 and 1080 released, and so there wasn't time for AMD to revise Vega to suit the reality of the GPU market that Nvidia has made fully clear.

 

Taking all these things into account, I expect that the Vega-based RX 490, the so-called 4K GPU, will be a bit less powerful than a GTX 1070 in DX11 applications, and perhaps a bit more powerful than a GTX 1070 in async-compute applications... but that it will still be less powerful than a GTX 1080. I think the RX 490 will deliver about the same gaming performance at 1440p as the RX 480 does at 1080p.

Good, because that was the case last time as well. R9-390(X) was the GTX970 equivalent, then the the Fury and Fury X came around to go after the 980 and 980Ti. So now we'll have an RX490 going head-to-head with a GTX1070, and a Fury 2-series going up against the 1080/1080Ti.

 

That said, the RX480 absolutely kills it in games like Doom at 1440p with Vulkan. 80+ fps on pretty much ultra everything. For a $200-$250 card, that's a great deal if you ask me. It's not just >60fps in Dota 2 or LoL, etc. Give it the proper API to run with and the RX series scream.

If AMD wanted to go head-to-head with a GTX 1070, then they should have released a card capable of that by now. When the RX 490 releases, it won't be going head-to-head, it will be picking up leftovers. And the same goes for an AMD card that would be around a GTX 1080's performance. Nvidia has already moved beyond that, with the Titan XP. A GTX 1080ti would probably be around the performance of a Titan XP, which is significantly beyond the performance of a GTX 1080. AMD doesn't even yet have something to compete with the GTX 1070, let alone a 1080, let alone a 1080ti. It's like AMD is one generation behind, right now.

Feels like they're pushing it out earlier to respond to the 1070 and 1080. Hopefully these take on those cards and beat them. They're gonna have HBM2 right? Or are these gonna run with GDDR5x? Hopefully they announce a fury replacement soon cuz i want a new card capable of running games on 4K. If they announce a fury replacement ill just wait longer. My PC will never have a nvidia card in it, that much is certain.

Dell was having a $600 off sale for the fully specced out model, so I decided to get it :P

Fully specced out early 2013 Macbook "pro" with gt 650m and constant 105c temperature on the CPU (GPU is 80-90C) when doing anything intensive...

A 2013 laptop with a regular sized battery still has better battery life than a 2017 laptop with a massive battery! I think this is a testament to apple's ability at making laptops, or maybe how little CPU technology has improved even 4+ years later (at least, until the recent introduction of 15W 4 core CPUs). Anyway, I'm never going to get a 35W CPU laptop again unless battery technology becomes ~5x better than as it is in 2018.

Apple knows how to make proper consumer-grade laptops (they don't know how to make pro laptops though). I guess this mostly software power efficiency related, but getting a mac makes perfect sense if you want a portable/powerful laptop that can do anything you want it to with great battery life.
