Nvidia's Ansel has "borrowed" a lot of code from modder.

Though I am inclined to agree with Deadeye that it was a dev that punked it.  Not that that changes anything, still results in nvidia stealing code and needing to resolve it (if true).

So the last big player in GPU's was 3DFX. They were actually bought by NVIDIA in 2002, but NVIDIA only bought them for some IP and technologies, and essentially just shut the company down.

Under the Ati name, drivers and GPU were awesome. when everything went under the AMD name, I saw performance cut to a third of what it was within 3 years, and never improve by the end of 2015.

You are aware that AMD owned ATI for a little while even before that card was released, right?

That card was released in 2010, and AMD bought ATI in 2006.

Something released for free can have legal basis to sue people using it.

The whole principle of GNU licenses for instance is to ensure that when you release something with that, even if it's free, it is enough to sue people using it, for profit or not.

Nvidia is in the wrong here, since you have to credit people you borrow code from. Doesn't matter how much code it represents, it's just for the principle. It is nothing in the grand scheme of things, but it shows a general lack of moral values in a certain way.

 

 

Interesting thing is that if they used someone else's code, and patented bits of Ansel, anyone could maybe have ground to sue them to annul their patents (wink wink AMD).

All of their gpu architectures. Unlike Apple, who uses other companies' cpus and gpus, nvidia does not. There can be fundamentally different ways to implement a seemingly identical function, which is the case in most of the things you mentioned.

It is licensed actually. It's not a GNU GPL license, but it does allow you to use and distribute the software for non-commercial uses without giving credit.

Man, I remember having a Voodoo something, probably from Diamond, on a 486, as a kid. I seem to recall it having "8 something", but it can'be vram, the PC itself had 8MB ram

Didn't who split? AMD and ATI? Nope. The internal GPU division was reorganized internally, and they officially changed the division name to Radeon Technology Group. But RTG remains the internal GPU division of AMD, none the less.

If you've done any coding you'll know that you're often going online to find what you need and then tweak it to make it your own...t's a waste of time to do a lot of work that's already done, reinventing the wheel every time you make a program. You don't always keep super good track of everything you've taken from other sources. I'm sure this guy knows that, probably has done it himself, and doesn't consider it a huge deal...especially now that they're giving him credit. It's not like it's some nefarious plan by Nvidia corporate to steal the hard fought code of poor struggling programmers...it's just a bunch of guys in cubicals trying to get their job done as best they can. To make a huge deal out of this means some of those guys would get fired since nobody but them are to be blamed.

This does not have a GNU license. "The principle" has no value in court, and frankly being bothered by something like this is quite petty. There are 0 grounds to sue them on.

I beg to differ. If something using this code is patented, a lawsuit can be done to annul the patent. There is something called novelty in patents, which using a code that already existed and was published publicly is not compatible with. Looking at the copyright license of the modder, it is illegal for them to do so without crediting him. That guy is obviously a chilled one and he hasn't taken advantage of that, good for him, but he could have forced nvidia to remove the code from Ansel.
