Good rule of thumb is to upgrade when selling your current card used will net you enough cash to get something better.

i.e. I sold my R9295x2 to a guy in Winnipeg for $600CAD, which combined with 3 years of birthday money, was able to get me enough cash to pay for a GTX 1080 Strix out of pocket. Usually this is every 3 or so years. You just have to sell at the perfect time

Essentially "Buy low, sell High".

Bought my Sapphire R9 290 Tri-x for 220 euro 2 years ago, can still sell it for 150 euro. So if you indeed save money, you can keep upgrading your GPU to an even better one every few years. Not accounting hardware failure / malfunction though.

The last option made me snort. :D

I usually upgrade whenever I can, although my current rig is basically everything I've ever dreamed of... For now.

My actual PC is quite old (5 or 6 years old) the best component in it is a GTX 750 ti I bougth last year and wich was yhe only upgrade I made to this computer.

I'm updating (in a week or so) and won't be keeping anything, but for now on I think i'll just update my GPU evry 2 or 3 years, or keep it longer if I feel like it's still good enough for what I do.

Usually when the card fails. Last time my graphics card failed I spent about 2 years using integrated graphics before I bother replacing with a GTX 460.

I have no plans to replace my current cards any time soon.

I upgraded from a GTX 260 to a GTX 980ti.... so yeah.

That being said, I'm not a kid anymore and have the money to buy myself my own things, and I've recently gotten into computer building so I suspect it shall be considerably more frequent going forward.

You want a gpu to last years and years so 2-4 years.

unless you bought a 1080 which will last like 7 years

I always get £280-350 range card new every year, I find it more economical than the top card every 2 years.

so 670 - 770 - 290x/970 - 1070 (but just bought 980ti on a great deal).

if selling older gen card every year it works out to about £150 spent on gpu every year.

I do it when I feel like wasting more money for something that isn't that great and end up regretting it. Last upgrade that was with it for me was going from 660ti to a Titan.

It depends on the games really.

Once I encounter a game that my current setup struggles with, that's when the upgrade happens.

So I will say probably every 3 years or so, with the exception of this past year.

I am just not that happy with my R9 380.

Usually varies for me, but I try to get 2 years max out of a GPU.

Reason I loved my OG Titans, since I rocked those bad boys all the way to this year before I got the good deal on the two 980Tis I have now.  But major factor for me on upgrading is folding PPD, BOINC potential, and then gaming after those two since I don't really buy the latest games.  I'm usually cheap bugger who can easily wait years for a game to drop to 20-25 dollar range or less.  Plus, depends if I come across a good deal on used GPUs.

It sorta depends for me.  I just jumped from a 950 from a 970 in a matter of months because it was really cheap for me to do so, but the 950 was planned to be a very temporary upgrade.

Prior to that, my last high end GPU was a 560 ti, which I got 3 years ago.  At that time I think Kepler was out, so I tend to shop a gen back.  And that GPU hopped around in a few of my systems.  3 years is what I typically aim to get out of a GPU before upgrading, and I'll usually retire/re-purpose my GPUs in a variety of ways.
