Topic Post limit

suchamoneypit

So on multiple occasions I have seen bots spam topics. Why is there not a time limit between posting topics? something like 1-2 minutes between topic posts would prevent a lot of spam, and anyone posting quality topics would be hard pressed to bump into this limit. (There could be a limit and I just don't know)

A few people have had ideas about implementing some sort of captcha and/or time limit to prevent bots.  I don't know why there's no limit or captcha but to me the bots seem like a recent development so it could be in the works.

I would find doing a captcha to make a post extremely annoying, I personally think a timed limit is the best route to go as it would stop the spam and be unnoticeable to normal users.

It possibly could be annoying but just a click captcha would prevent a lot of stuff I think.  I hate the ones where you have to select pictures that match whatever etc etc.

How about a timer that gives a captcha if you post more than 1 topic per minute?

Spammers should be left with active accounts but placed in a subsection which filters their posts so they only confirm their love for maple syrup with each spam post they attempt to make.

Thats a good idea. The best of both. Normal users unaffected, and if it happens to affect you, you can prove your human.

Many of the bots hit in groups or only post 2-3 post in a few minutes, which could easily be a person who posted in the test section or the wrong section or edited/quoted/moved a post.

If it was more like this recent on or spam bots in email, where its many posts or a flood, then it would work, but would slip under easily.

Just a thought, timing could be different. I don't know the process for banning bots but if it isn't already, IP banning may be of use.

Ip banning doesn't really work. Dynamic IPs and public computers are a thing.

As for timer. It could be good if forum software would see posting new thread and reply as two different things. But it doesn't. So any such limit on creating topics woulz also limit normal replies. And have its worse on Recent Snipers.

I don't know why you people are so annoyed about this. Its not like its new thing. Report, add to ignore and move on. I use my own brain to filter spam threads to teply for legit ones.

No need to be  condescending, I agree, it is annoying that people make a big deal  about the bots, but on the  other hand. chinese spam bots are also rather annoying.

There's already a timer on posting content however it doesn't always work. It was enabled to prevent double posting however due to the way the internet works, that can still occur.

IDEA: Implement a Google ReCaptcha checkbox for ALL POSTS on the site. Spam-B-Gone!

I understand this might not be simple as we're dealing with IP.Services here, but surely other communities utilizing IP.Board are having bot spam too, no?

So one would logically expect IP.Services to provide some kind of security patch, especially when you pay top dollar for a professional CMS.

I did this on an old horrifically mangled installation of ClanSphere (a PHP based clan and forum CMS) and it stopped bot posting in its' tracks.

We then implemented it on the sign-up page and went from 10-20 fake account signups per day to 1 or 2 per month.

A Captcha wouldn't help as the staff have determined that these aren't bots, they're humans copy-pasting. They'd just click the Captcha and continue spamming.
