I guess, I've not seen that many reviews/comparisons of the i3 6100 vs FX/athlon CPUs but one thing for sure is the FX 6300 is cheaper than the i3 (or at least it is in the UK by 20 quid if you're buying from UK based reputable sites) which is almost enough to cover the costs of a 212 evo cooler and yes the motherboards are a tad more expensive but may as well buy a FX4300 (or an athlon), OC that shit and save a tad of dosh

The i3 also doesn't need a GPU, and due to the motherboard the OP could save up after getting it...and upgrade to a far better CPU that destroys anything from AMD's CMT FX line-which was released in 2011, refreshed in 2012 and has aged poorly since then. The upgrades after the i3 also wouldn't bottleneck what is currently a high end graphics card.

You do not want a FX-4300, it will be notably weaker than FX-6300 or FX-8300 in any title that can even use more than 4-threads...

Well I wouldn't say the FX line aged that poorly...considering a FX 8350 will still beat an i5 6600k at certain tasks (not gaming obviously) but yes, that is indeed true how OP could save and get something better in the future without having to upgrade their RAM or motherboard.

True but price to performance wise (or at least here in the UK) FX4300 chips can be found at almost half the price of a FX6300 where the price difference is large enough that from a price to performance perspective the FX4300 isn't a bad buy. (although an athlon x4 would be a better buy while costing more or less the same or even cheaper).

Yes and no, the X4s lack of a L3 cache can cause issues in games such as Overwatch where it lose badly to the FX-4300...

While X4s have slightly better IPC (which puts them straight in line with sandy i5 locked, not IPC wise but straight performance wise) so...hard to say which ones is better?

FX-4300 at 4.4GHz is equal to a Athlon X4 880K at 4.3GHz, and we all know the FX-4300 is also probably a better OCer and have good board options to push it all the way up to 5GHz or near that number!

Which means more dosh on cooler and motherboard for the extra speed so...again, it's a trade off someone's gonna have to decide

no it doesnt...you need a graphics card for AMD FX cpu...otherwise get an APU.

Then it's settled. It was condescending because you pulled the move of a bigot and opted to only listen to those who gave answers that supported your idea. You didn't actually humor those of us that tried to convey to you the truth of the matter. An older i3 is the same price as that 6300 and the motherboards from Intel aren't magically more expensive, plus most programs will better make use of 4 more powerful threads instead of 6 weaker threads.

 

But, you likely already bought it and wanted more reassurance that it was a good idea/purchase, so nevermind with any of this. Oh well.

You are free to give advice for free or ignore threads and users at will in this forum. People who asks is not committed to take any particular course of action based on the answers received. No point in being butthurt about people not following your advice, no matter how good you think it was. You did your altruistic good deed, you can move on.

 

Also, the question was AM3+ CPU for $100, not CPU for $100. I prefer to answer what people ask, not what is best for them, because what do I know about the latter, dealing with complete strangers and all. The former, though, is perfectly well defined, regardless of whether it's the best question they could ask or not.

If I shut off two cores on my E3-1231v3 to simulate a 3.8 GHz Haswell i3 then GTA V plays really well on very high / ultra with my GTX 970. At least GTA V single player (I don't ever play MP). I was really impressed, it's usually running in the 70s fps with the worst dips into the low to mid 50s, with those dips happening when driving through the part of Los Santos with all the skyscrapers. I'd be surprised if the 8MB of L3 cache on my Xeon vs the 3MB/4MB on i3s makes much difference based on benchmarks I have seen before testing L3 cache.

Yes this specific one does. But others may not have. For example my msi AM3+ motherboard doesnt have intergrated graphics. Also keep in mind that intergrated graphics from mobo's usually are quite worse than intergrated graphics on cpu's.

Actually the majority projected pros and cons of the fx 6300. Also the fx 6300 is amazing for a budget build and will last some time if you don't have extreme requirements, witch honestly most of us don't. I for example use it in my gaming rig and I play at 1080p without any problems at all. It doesn't bottleneck my gpu it doesnt disrupt me at my workload and all in all I bet I got a better deal buying it and using it than most people that bought i5's or i7's. Remember it is all about cost to performance ratio. I bet that 80% of the people that buy i7 k's don't even use half of their amazing potential.

You should probably learn what a tight budget is. Also if you want to judge other people about their hardware choices you really should consider your purchase of a gtx 960 with 4gb of vram... We can all judge but this forum is about helping I think.

Dude, it's a laptop.  It's a 4GB GTX 960M or did you need to take note of the 15.6" screen there too? Sorry but this machine cost me $810 which isn't super expensive as far as laptops go. Furthermore, I know how to manage budget builds and extreme budget builds generally don't feature 6-core CPUs, they feature dual cores and are pinching pennies the whole way through. Less talk, more listening please.
