Sapphire Nitro RX 470 Review

The RX 470 is here, and it is pretty darn sweet for the price... Is it the current king of value 1080p gaming?

Sapphire doesn't seem to have much differentiating from the Nitro+ 470 and 480 makes it a bit hard. Though 8GB of vram will be nice.

I have to agree with Luke on this

 

the price gap between the 470 and 480 is too close

 

20 buck is pretty much just going hungry by skipping 4 meals if each meal cost 5 bucks

 

note that the Sapphire RX 470 and other aftermarket air cooler solutions all need 6-8 pin PCI-E power plugs

 

so if your PSU only has 6 pins PCI-E, be sure to get only the ones that uses PCI-E 6 pin power.

I doubt it will undercut an upcoming gtx 1050, because of the 3gb 1060 at $200.

I highly doubt a 1050 would cost $190.

I don't think the pricing is that surprising.  This card will be discounted over the product cycle more than the RX 480, so starting out close that level makes sense.  AMD is covering their development costs early, as they should.

 

Also, let's talk about the MSRP for a moment.   Newegg USA doesn't have a single one in stock, and that's for +$40 or more over list.   There's a few available, at the moment, on Amazon USA, for between $10-$100 over list price.  AMD has seen some amazing demand for their cards this cycle, so the RX 470's MSRP is pretty misleading at the moment.  It might actually be available for $200 USD, whereas the RX 480 doesn't seem like it's going to be for a rather long while.

Sadly, I think there's real supply problems In Europe, or at least here in Romania. GTX 1060 is in stock at most online stores, at my favorite online store there's 7 different GTX 1060 models starting from 1300 RON (330$) while there's only one RX 470 (the nitro+ 4GB) in stock at 1100 RON (279$) ... and there's no RX 480 in stock whatsoever, or even for pre-order - though the reference RX 480 is listed at 1280 RON (325$)

 

As for the video, maybe it's just me but i think there's a tiny problem with the colors?  Luke seems a bit too brown with a very slight hint of green... I guess all the brown and dark orange background doesn't help

Reference RX 480 are plentiful here. But AIB RX 480 only XFX shows up. I pre-ordered a Sapphire 8GB version a month ago. Still haven't received it.

 

Meanwhile, RX470 Nitro can be found both 4 GB and 8 GB versions in many shops now.

 

AMD should supply more chips to their partners, instead of putting out loads of reference cards nobody(as least I) wants.

 

AMD keeps fucking up.

Me too. Nitro+ RX470 and RX480 4GB version have the same price. I think I should just go for RX480 4GB.

The small price difference is only for the loud reference 480. There are also cheaper 470s

I currently have a GTX 680 Classified, and up to this point Ive strongly stood behind the idea of "Better dead(nvidia) than red", I don't have the money to get a new 1080/1070. Would an RX 470 or 480 be worth my money for an upgrade or should I just hold out until next year when I might be able to get a 1080? I have no experience with AMD cards and am wondering what you guys think

You could wait a couple more months and get a 980ti for like $300. If they are already $389 new, the prices will keep falling. I get about 142 avg. FPS on OverWatch max settings at 1440p.

Wait how did hitman lose performance under DX12? Previously it was making a 390 as fast as a stock titan X in like that one specific test

 

Also why don't you guys do more intensive testing? such as with at least minimum frame rates if not 1% and .1% low frame rates, frame time testing and all that. I guess it's real world ish, but you guys are probably the biggest tech channel, so why only do like the minimum amount of work?

Also why not do comparative results against last gen mid range and low end cards?

Or perhaps follow up on that budget 4k gaming video and retest esports games at 4k with a new mid range GPU

Also will you be doing 470/480 crossfire testing for the hell of it?

I was talking about the Nitro+ RX 480 and 470, Sapphire makes it sort of hard whether to spend a bit more and get the 480 or spend a bit less and get the 470 because the 470 from Sapphire, the Nitro+ (again neither are reference) is nearly the same as the 480. So I guess what this really is, is like the R9 380X and R9 380.

Is it just me or was the lighting quite poor for this video? Luke looked a lot better in the ad spot than the main video segments.

That's not their thing. You don't get your in-depth testing and analysis on youtube, you go to the text review sites.

I have said this before in their previous GPU "reviews" and I'll say it again here.  This is more of a overview rather than a review.  I prefer LMG make in-depth analysis on products and not some quick 3 minute summary with some FPS benchmarks.  FPS benchmarks is not the be-all-and-end-all metric. What about power consumption? noise levels? overclock ability? Furthermore, why are you talking about the price of the reference rx470 when this video is about the Sapphire nitro+ one? (this card is $209 on newegg)

I'd like to see a comparison between the Sapphire Radeon RX 480 Nitro+ 8GB and the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 or 1080. Thus giving us a comprehensive look between the two, and seeing just how close Radeon is to NVIDIA's quality but expensive products.
Just an idea.
