What brands have good build quality?

Second hand Thinkpads are widely available. If you're lucky, you might find someone selling a X1 Yoga or X1 Carbon. Pinnacle of laptops.

I don't know how many times I must repeat myself, but I'm not buying used.  Buying used means the laptop will have dings, scratches, other signs of wear. It wont have a warranty. There could be something wrong with it that wont become apparent until its too late. Furthermore, I don't want, or need, a workstation. They are so overpriced and underspec that even were I to buy one used, for the same cost I could still buy a more powerful consumer notebook. Getting a workstation with an i7 is expensive enough, getting one with a decent GPU is next to impractical.

Are workstations extremely well built? No doubt about it. But there are plenty of consumer models that are built well enough that it is no concern.
