AMD Zen Engineering Sample Benchmark Leaks Out - Summit Ridge CPU Faster Than The Intel Core i5 4670K In AotS Benchmark

Source 1: http://wccftech.com/amd-zen-es-benchmarks/

  • “Verified” benchmarks of the upcoming Zen summit ridge

  • These are “verified” due to the leaked OPN (order part number) of the first Zen CPU, which matches up with the OPN shown in the Zen engineering sample benchmarks

  • Benchmarks are of an engineering sample and may not be entirely representative of the retail product

  • Was testing using a setup with an unnamed MB and an RX 480

  • 1080p average framerates in Ashes of the Singularity showed 58fps for the Zen ES, compared to 65.4fps on an Intel Core i7-4790 and 52.6fps on an Intel Core i5-4670K

  • The Zen ES is currently clocked at 2.8Ghz base and 3.2Ghz boost

  • These benchmarks have since been pulled down by the source

Denuvo Has Been Successfully Cracked

Toshiba teases 100TB QLC SSD

Source 1: linustechtips.com/need-even-more-space… OP: LucidMew

Source 2: theregister.co.uk/toshiba_100tb_qlc_ssd

  • Important point is that this is ALL TALK right now

  • QLC (quad-level cell) NAND technology was introduced recently, which uses four bits per cell to hold your data

  • Would be a 3D SSD with a PCIe gen 3 interface, more than 100TB capacity, 3GB/sec sequential read bandwidth and 1GB/sec write bandwidth

  • Random read of 50,000 IOPS, random write of 14,000 IOPS

  • 9 watts active power consumption, the same as a 3.5-inch 8TB SATA 6GBit/s HDD, idle consumption less than 100 mWatts compared to 8 watts on the same HDD

  • 3PB to 6PB workload over its lifetime, with the disk having 900TB (written)

  • Toshiba is “actively working on a product” and has “been in early/high-level testing with hyper-scale customers”

  • Facebook has allegedly mused that QLC drives could have a 150 write cycle endurance rating, as well as very significant WORM (write once, read many) use

  • Some analysts expect we will have a QLC product announcement from Toshiba by the end of Q1 2017

Samsung: 64-layer V-NAND, Bigger SSDs, Z-SSD

Source 1: https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/641693-samsung-announces-64- OP: DocSwag

Source 2: http://www.anandtech.com/show/10560/samsung-at-flash-memory-summit-64la

  • Announced their fourth generation of 3D NAND and several more SSD upgrades it enables

    • Also announced a new memory type and corresponding SSD product

    • Haven’t been clear on what the new memory actually is

  • Fourth gen of 3D NAND bumps the layer count up to 64

    • Compared to the 48 layer design used by the third generation V-NAND

  • New NAND supports an increased interface speed of 800Mbps

    • Key to reducing performance penalty that comes from consolidating more flash onto fewer independent chips

  • Complementing this will be a new non-standard oversized M.2 form factor 32mm wide and 114mm long

    • Compared to typical enterprise M.2 size of 22mm by 110mm

      • Samsung will be using this space to produce 8TB drives

      • These will be enterprise SSDs

      • Will also be producing 4TB drives in standard M.2 sizing

  • Samsung Z-SSD Slides

    • Shows a “performance gap” between DRAM and SSDs, which this apparently fills

    • Z-SSD features Z-NAND, New SSD controller, higher sequential read speeds, better energy efficiency, and less latency

    • The new 3D XPoint NVMe drives were absent from these comparisons, as they’re still under development from Micron and Intel

  • Slides state there will be a 1TB Z-SSD this year, and 2TB and 4TB Z-SSDs next year

    • Press release then said that Z-SSDs would launch “next year”

  • Intel hasn’t said how much they paid

    • Source with knowledge of the deal said it is valued at around $408 million

  • Intel VP Jason Waxman told Recode that the shift to artificial intelligence could dwarf the move to cloud computing

    • Machine learning, he said, will be needed as we move into a world where billions of devices are connecting and talking to one another

  • Company led by former Qualcomm researcher Naveen Rao

    • Raised $25 million in venture funding

    • Has a contract to work with In-Q-tel, U.S Intelligence community’s venture arm

  • Rao said the deal wasn’t about money, but selling to Intel would give them “access to technology they’d never dream about”

Source 3: http://www.wired.co.uk/article/brain-machine-interface-parapeligic-recovery

  • Virtual reality and non-invasive brain-machine interfaces (BMIs) are able to help paralysed regain touch sensations and also some voluntary control of muscles in their legs

  • New study published in Scientific Reports

    • Has seen eight chronic spinal cord injury (SCI) paraplegics complete a 12-month training programme

    • Used a brain-controlled exoskeleton and VR environments

  • Year-long study is one of the first tests of the effects of long-term training using technology on those with chronic injuries

  • Although the number is small, each person had been diagnosed as paraplegic for between three and 13 years

    • Aged between 26 and 38 years old

  • Patients all saw improvements in ability to feel sensations rising from their skin

    • Such as touch, pressure, cold, warmth, and pain

  • “Patients also regained voluntary motor control in key muscles below the SCI level, as measured by EMGs, resulting in marked improvement in their walking index” - academics wrote in the paper

  • As a result, 50% of the patients were “upgraded” to a diagnosis of partial paralysis, rather than full paralysis

  • Miguel Nicolelis, leader of research and neuroscientist at Duke University, said “most” of the patients saw improvements in bladder control and bowel function

  • “After 10 months of training the same patient became capable of walking using a walker, braces and the assistance of one therapist,” the researchers report

  • Secure boot is enabled in the firmware of a Microsoft device

    • Stops you from booting up to any OS you want on your Windows tablet, phones, etc

  • Microsoft quiet as researchers spot debug mode flaw that bypasses OS checks

  • They have inadvertently demonstrated the security problem of including a universal backdoor in its software

    • After they accidently leaked their so-called “golden key”

      • Allowing users to  unlock any device that supposedly protected by Secure Boot, such as phones and tablets

  • Golden keys were found in March of this year

    • Researchers note that this is a real-world demonstration of the lack of wisdom in the FBI’s recent demands for universal backdoors in Apple devices

  • Microsoft has issued several patches to address the problem, but it hasn’t been completely resolved

Kansas farm sues MaxMind over “massive IP ‘glitch’” - JON TOPIC

Source 1: linustechtips.com/kansas-farm-sues-maxmind… OP: NumLock21

Source 2: washingtonpost.com/lawsuit-how-a-quiet-kansas…

  • “How a quiet Kansas home wound up with 600 million IP addresses and a world of trouble”

  • Property is 2-hour drive from the geographic center of the United States

  • 82-year old owner, Joyce Vogelman Taylor, and two renters, James and Theresa Arnold, live on the property

  • MaxMind, a digital company that maps IP addresses, used the geographical center of the US as the “default” location for US-based IP addresses

    • Sometimes, when mapping IPs, they are only able to determine the country of origin, which sets the address to the default of 38 degrees North and 97 degrees West, the (approximate) geographic center of the US

    • 38N and 97W is also the coordinates of Arnolds’ front yard

  • Since 2011 Taylor has been receiving complaints including:

    • Interrupting email service for some customers of a certain small business

    • Harboring a stolen vehicle

    • Harboring runaway children

    • “Keeping girls in the house to make pornographic films”

  • Ambulances have appeared “prepared to save suicidal persons,” FBI agents, federal marshals, IRS collectors, and other law enforcement officers have appeared on their doorstep at all hours of the day and night

  • One random morning, a broken toilet was even left in their driveway without explanation

  • MaxMind’s co-founder Thomas Mather said “The default location in Kansas was chosen over ten years ago when the company started. At that time, we picked a latitude and longitude that was in the center of the country, and it didn’t occur to us that people would use the database to attempt to locate people down to a household level. We have always advertised the database as determining the location down to a city or zip code level. To my knowledge, we have never claimed that our database could be used to locate a household.”

  • MaxMind has since changed their “default location” in the US to the center of a lake west of Wichita

  • The Arnolds have filed a lawsuit against MaxMind seeking “compensatory and punitive damages in excess of $75,000”

  • “My clients have been through digital hell,” said their attorney. “The most vile accusations have been made against them - such as that they’ve been involved in child pornography.”

  • MaxMind has not yet commented on the lawsuit

Apple Counters Australian Banks Call for iPhone NFC Access, Cites Handset Security

Source 2: http://appleinsider.com/articles/16/08/09/apple-counters-australian-banks-call-fo

  • In July, Australia’s three largest banks filed an ACCC (Australian Competition and Consumer Commission) application seeking approval to negotiate the installation of third-party digital wallets on iPhones

    • Currently, Apple restricts touchless NFC payments to its in-house Apple Pay solution

      • Limitation Apple says is meant to protect consumers

  • Apple said in a letter addressed to the ACCC that requests for access to iPhone’s digital wallet technology would undermine security safeguards

  • “Apple upholds very high security safeguards for our customers when they use Apple devices to make payments,” Apple said in a statement to the ACCC

  • “These banks want to maintain complete control over their customers. The present application is only the latest tactic employed by these competing banks to blunt Apple’s entry into the Australian market.”

  • Self-driving Tesla Model X credited with having helped save an American man’s life after its autopilot function got him to the hospital when he suffered a pulmonary embolism

    • Man named Joshua Neally, a lawyer from Springfield, Missouri

  • He called his wife and said something was wrong, and that he couldn’t breathe

  • Thinking it would be quicker than pulling over to call an ambulance, he set the autopilot autonomous function on the Tesla Model X

    • He has just got the car a few weeks before this happened

  • He doesn’t remember much after he set this mode, as the car drove him over 20 miles to Branson

    • Neally managed to steer the car the last mile or so between the motorway and the hospital

Fully specced out early 2013 Macbook "pro" with gt 650m and constant 105c temperature on the CPU (GPU is 80-90C) when doing anything intensive...

A 2013 laptop with a regular sized battery still has better battery life than a 2017 laptop with a massive battery! I think this is a testament to apple's ability at making laptops, or maybe how little CPU technology has improved even 4+ years later (at least, until the recent introduction of 15W 4 core CPUs). Anyway, I'm never going to get a 35W CPU laptop again unless battery technology becomes ~5x better than as it is in 2018.

Apple knows how to make proper consumer-grade laptops (they don't know how to make pro laptops though). I guess this mostly software power efficiency related, but getting a mac makes perfect sense if you want a portable/powerful laptop that can do anything you want it to with great battery life.

I agree with Linus in that the idea that AMD is some sort of "good guy" who has only good intentions is preposterous. Corporations almost always want to eliminate the competition. That said however, I still love AMD and would always remain enthusiastic for them. I don't see how any true tech enthusiast would wish ill upon a supplier in the industry. Even if Zen predictably doesn't move mountains I may still buy one considering just how slowly CPU technology is growing with my 4 year old CPU able to run just about everything I can imagine doing with it. Upgrading to 14nm for me will literally be an "impossible to go wrong" scenario no matter who I choose.

I think the real mountain mover will be what AMD and Intel both do once a hard limit with Silicon has been hit.
