Ads Are Important...

Michael McAllister

I agree that ads to an extent are vital for the survival of content providers.  Unfortunately, the creators of AdBlock Plus are, in my opinion, approaching this whole issue incorrectly.  They have received some deserved criticism recently.  AdBlock would probably have a much better reputation if the intention of its creators was not to rid the Internet of ads.  Any intelligent person would recognize the flaw in this logic.

Admittedly, I do use AdBlock but very selectively.  On Twitch, for instance, I would love to support streamers via ads, however, the algorithm for advertisements is completely atrocious.  There's been so many times where a streamer will be in mid sentence and a thirty second ad will roll.  I mean seriously?  I've seen live streams on YouTube that were extremely well done by comparison.  AdBlock Plus should be called AnnoyanceBlock Plus because I genuinely believe that most users that are aware of AdBlock do not block all ads.  While I am sure there are those that do, this is truly not the case with everyone.

A very interesting topic, and a very good argument you make.

I don't have a problem with ads as long as they don't hinder my enjoyment of whatever activity it is I'm undertaking.

I think youtube do it pretty well.

However, I think that ads should be better tailored to the person watching. I wouldn't mind ads if I could tell the site what I was interested in and enjoyed, and what I spend my money on, and have ads tailored as such.... however, this is what facebook does (I believe) and their ads are awful.

I'll be interested to hear other opinions on this subject :)

I block everything, because I'm lazy. If someone did an absolutely outstanding job, that's the only time I turn it off, and rewatch it.

Very good topic to focus on and a valid argument. It's like doctor visits, they are sometimes annoying but they insure our survival, right?

I liken it to an upcoming music artist trying to sell you their album without offering samples.  Someone tried to force their album on me in a Vegas casino once lol.

Something like that, if the site is one I personally trust, I'll turn off ad-block for that site. Otherwise, I have my adblock to block everything for the sole reason I don't like cleaning up computer STDs/getting a headache from a crappy spam ad that implies I have a virus and need a scan...while using the Windows XP window......

I do agree with the annoying ads (why I don't watch TV as the ads are louder than the show currently on and S*&t me off!). Some shows like top gear have content taken out to show ads since its in an hour time slot :(

I block everything that isn't LTT, TekSyndacate, ToT, OC3DTV, and a few other channels on youtube. I don't block twitch because I only watch when I'm interested in what's going on.

I used to love Hulu but I hardly ever use that anymore because the ads are way too frequent.  I could be watching a show for five minutes and get five consecutive 30-second ads in a row.  Is it really necessary that all of the ads interrupt your viewing experience?  Hell, even if you put a banner ad on the side somewhere, that still could be enough to entice me to buy a Big Mac without rubbing my nose in it.

It's a touchy subject, in twitch streams, I often notice, every adbreak on every stream, there is that pack of idiots that just spams "adblock!!!! get adblock guize its beast!!"

If you're denying a content creator of their revenue you sit there, shut up and enjoy the ad-free content, rather than encourage others to also deny the creator of an income.

That being said, the very few streams I watch I do adblock, though I am subbed to the only streams I watch.

It's great for when you're on sites that have those dodgy ads with all the trackers and crap like that, but I do filter specific domains such as youtube and certain forums, because I know that the ads are only going to be banners or skippable anyway.

I'd like to make one thing very clear though.  I'm not personally happy about using AdBlock on Twitch.  Their advertisement algorithm though in its current state is completely ass backwards.  If they took YouTube's approach or allowed streamers to roll ads when they go get a drink or something, I'd have a completely different outlook on Twitch.

The developers of AdBlock Plus has been criticized? When? The only ones I've seen that gets a lot of crap are the developers of AdBlock (the ones who bought ads for AdBlock) which are completely different people and in no way associated with AdBlock Plus.

I hate all third party websites, when I want to visit a website I don't want to load 20 other ones, therefore I'm using "Request Policy" Addon for Firefox.

Nope not the same.

AdBlock is an addon for Chrome and Safari developed by Michael Gundlach. Over 20 million users.

AdBlock Plus is an open source addon for Firefox, Chrome, Android, Opera and Internet Explorer currently developed by Wladimir Palant. Over 200 million users.

Here is from AdBlock's website:

What's in a name?

AdBlock was inspired by an extension created long ago for the older Firefox web browser called "Adblock Plus" (which was in turn named after a yet older Firefox "Adblock" project; yes, it's confusing), but it's not related to those. You've come to the right place to get AdBlock.

Really confusing, I know. I think there are more ad blocking programs as well with similar names.

So the Chrome addon "AdBlock" (the ones who bought ads) are named after the Firefox extension AdBlock Plus, which in turn was named after a Firefox addon that no longer exists which was called "AdBlock".

I don't block ads. Ever.

But at the same time, I don't go where ads are absurdly prevalent. So I have no use for Adblock.

Ads are never absurdly prevalent to me because I am very good at seeing them (i.e. the "Download" ad versus the true "Download" button).

I'm a unique case I guess.

I believe twitch actually does (or used to) allow streamers to choose when to roll adds, the problem is that the streamer becomes apathetic and just rolls them whenever and doesn't pause the game they are playing a lot of the time, which is why I unfortunately usually block ads on twitch. I used to block ads on Youtube but really Youtube ads aren't that bad and I feel bad about taking money away from my favorite content creators, Youtube allows you to skip any ads over 30 seconds anyways.

Ads are as important? Ads are as important as the NSA having your data and using it against you. Ads do nothing more than brain wash you to think you need something you don't actually need or guide (putting it nicely) you to think a certain way and basically not think for yourself. Ads are like viruses seeking a host and they pray on the weak (minded) to get them to spend their money which otherwise they would not spend money on. Every ad seeks to stick a fork in your brain to get you to buy product X or think a certain way to punch a hole or mark X on a particular selector. Ads also "conveniently" lie to you like, "Product X, better and new improved.", better than what and improved how? Nope, they don't say how. Just look at the words they use, all of them give false hope or false promises, they never use actual facts or facts that actually matter. They they use scare tactics like, "Cancer!", "Death!", "Being Left Out.", yea we get it you are just a fad...

Ads are the downfall of society making decisions for people that lack the mental fortitude to think and make their own decisions.

BAN ADs! I not only use Ad Blockers but use what I call window adjustments to block ads by moving browser windows to keep the ad pane off the viewable screen (take that Ads that circumvent Ad Blockers) or layer other screens on top of those ad panes. So even if Ad Blockers didn't exist people will block them as they're hideous and extremely annoying and how they circumvent the volume is still yet another government kickback (you know). I walk out of Ads, for me Ad time is "Personal Visit the Loo" time, or mute time to read my mail. Just bring up another browser window to cover what ever they're hocking, computers are great! With windows you can also raise the volume on one browser window vs another, HA!

I roll with sigs off so I have no idea what you're advertising.

This is NOT the signature you are looking for.

I think you missed the entire point of my post, IS.  While what the NSA is doing is certainly newsworthy, it doesn't pertain to this thread.  Like I have mentioned, there are ads that are certainly annoying which is where ad blockers come in handy, however, ads are important in that they give content creators like Linus Media Group the ability to bring entertaining videos to their audience without asking for money.

Ask yourself this.  Would you pay an à la carte or monthly fee for every single bit of content you consume?  If the answer is no, sponsors (advertisers) are the only way in which you would be able to enjoy that content without paying an upfront cost.

With that being said, IS, while I understand your position, it is hard for me to believe that anyone could take what you are saying seriously given your dramatic tone.  C'mon, man.  You should know by now that LTT isn't a huge fan of sensationalism and neither am I.

For me the things that really mater are add density and distribution. That is, how many adds do I have to watch per unit of content and where/how often in watching the content will I be interrupted. Personally there is a big difference between an add at the beginning/end of a video and an add in the middle (these tend to make we want to punch small infants). For content creators that I like, I am much more tolerant of advertising. Further the relevance of the advertisement matters, I am much more willing (actually happy to) watch an add about corsairs new product on linus' videos whereas if he had adds for home loans I would be very annoyed. Just my thoughts.

I have unblocked many websites including Youtube so I can give money to people like LTT. They deserve it, it's only a few seconds of my time as well.

The only issue I have now is that I keep getting ads about pregnancy and babies. I'm not looking to get pregnant, Google!
