Should I use the CPU_Fan header, or the W_Pump header? (H100i v2)

I have been running some benchmarks to see how my system holds against similar systems. My i7 6700k @ 4.01Ghz scored a 973 cb on Cinebench, so I want to overclock my CPU to 4.2Ghz and increase from there.

While running this, I noticed my Z170-A MB also has a header named W_Pump, which I assume will allow the BIOS/UEFI to fine tune pump speeds. My pump and radiator fans are all plugged in to the CPU_Fan header, as Corsair recommended in the manual. I also have Corsair Link installed on my system. will any benefits be gained if i use that header?

 

I have included pictures of the CPU_Fan header, which i am currently using, and the W_Pump header, which is light green/white in color.

 

Also, is the CPU_OPT for configurations with a heat sink that has multiple fans without a joining wire? (to plug in the 2nd fan)

Pump header will only run at full speed, which is what you want cause the cooler doesn't have a variable speed pump.

I should note that i want to plug the pump into the W_pump header, not the radiator fans.

So since the H100i v2 does not have a variable speed pump, i should use the W_Pump header, since that will run the pump motor at full speed?

I thought the H100i v2 did have a varying pump speed control, since i have seen the motor fluctuate in speeds depending on loads. I may be hallucinating.

Strange that in the manual provided with the AiO says that you must set it up so its in the CPU_Fan header.

 

The pump's cable splits off into 3 connectors, one for the CPU_Fan header connection, and two that share the purpose of powering the supplied fans.

If i were to use a header that does not have PWM/speed control etc, In theory the radiator fans will run at full load constantly.

Do you know of a work around for this issue?

The newer Asus boards have  the water pump header.  The nice thing is in BIOS you can adjust the fan speed.   Being that you have an H100i you probably want that pump going full power all the time. It is fairly quiet.  The fans you can then plug in to other headers and control the speed there.

 

I have a D5 pump and it can go on either the CPU or the Water pump header.  I have mine on the CPU header, mainly cause if it ever dies, I'll get an audible warning. I suppose I could turn that feature on to other headers, but at least if it dies, my computer shuts down, it won't start up again cause the CPU header won't detect movement and thus not boot. I also use it to alter the speed of my flow.

I think I hear some whine from the motor, not sure if that's just the stock fans that Cooler Master includes with the Mastercase Pro 5.

Ill give it a shot, try some more overclocks. If all is well, I will keep.

The one I had did a steady hum, but the fans usually drowned it out.

That's because most motherboards don't have a special pump header, only CPU_Fan.

 

And no it is not a variable speed pump. The rpm is 2450 +/- 10%

If you see it go below 2200 then you might not be sending it enough voltage.

That;s what a pump header is for, to make sure ti gets the full 12v it needs.

Also the pump header on the Asus boards provide higher amps so the pump can run more efficient or something. I don't know if it really help AIOs

I'd use the pump fan header as the BIOS can't mess with it.

Which header is pretty much up to you, modern motherboards are capcable of delivering enough power on any header for your typical AIO. Having said that there are a few considerations.

 

If you plug the AIO into the CPU_FAN header then should the AIO fail, you will be warned on boot with a cpu_fan error, so it is a nice way to have a in-built security to check the AIO is working. However CPU_FAN headers typically have a fairly standard fan curve associated with it and so this will need to be changed in the BIOS to achieve a constant 12V  power supply as mentioned in the section above.

 

If you do not plug anything into your CPU_FAN header you will be greeted by a cpu fan error on boot, since this is a built in safety feature to make sure you don't kill a CPU with no cooling. This can be overrided in the BIOS by disabling monitoring of the CPU_FAN rpm. Plugging the AIO into the AIO_PUMP header is convenient because typically they have a "fan curve" associated with them that supplies the 12 V automatically. The obvious downside is that if the AIO dies, the computer will happily let itself toast until thermal shutdown (since the AIO_PUMP has no inbuilt warnings)

I have a H100i RGB Pro XT which comes with a SATA cable and 3-pin female. In the menu it says to connect both SATA power cable to plug and 3-pin female to CPU-fan header. Do you think if it is a mistake where it is optional to connect either SATA power cable or to CPU-fan header?
