Help me to pick a laptop?

Go to solution Solved by RadeonHD7350(best gpu),

nvm... lol

any good upgradeable laptops atm? with cheap upgrades

I was about to hit "fuck it" and get a razer blade (yes literally 2 minutes ago), but i thought I should wait and see what happens and check out what you guys are talking about before making the mistake. So @D2ultima should I consider clevo? And where can i buy them online? because i can't really buy them in real life. They don't really sell those in stores...

And currently what i'm looking for is a desktop grade CPU, 1060, and the price should be under $2000. I'll wait and see what happens on 16th August!

Just asking, is MSI a good brand that sells good stuff but is simply overpriced?

MSI is I'd say second best, so yes. Their real downsides are that they tend to be very overpriced and not say what you're buying when you buy their SSDs (like "512GB NVME SSD" without listing the brand, and a named SSD like a 950 pro will cost much more). And mobile CPUs, I suppose. But I'll have them miles above ASUS/Gigabyte/etc.

As for Clevo, if you're in the US, I'd suggest either Mythlogic or HIDevolution. Eurocom can have some good deals sometimes, and have a 10% discount if you're a student, but their US prices are often extremely high for no discernible reason. I recommend them because they're Prema partners, and you get unlocked/more-stable system and video BIOSes with the machines, under warranty.

I have finally moved to a desktop. Also my guides are outdated as hell.

Prelim prices have been released by Lenovo Medion.

Their Erazer lineup with a 6700hq 1060 6gb, 16gb ram and 1tb hdd is around $1950 usd. It can be configured up to with 6820hk and 1070. But its not MXM given that the CPU is soldered.

Razer Blade = Hot, loud and throttling paperweight for 2000$.

That would require nVidia to make a MXM version of that, I think. I would love to see one though (I don't know if we'll be able to cool it well though xD)

It wasn't close to a 480. They cut out so many cores that it was using less than full GF104/GF114, if I remember correctly, and its clockspeed was garbage.

Yes, because it was GF100. Shrinking down a big die is just less efficient. There were quite a few machines that cooled it ok though. The P170HM1 could handle it for the most part. I don't think that card would even be as hot as a 1060 xD.

Ha. nice try, but that's a D900F, which is what I had before my P370SM3. In fact, I still have it somewhere here but it's pretty much dead.

You think so eh? Here, look at the P570WM:

al-9270_4-jpg.111800

The final end of that system was (with Prema mods for compatibility with new cards) i7-4960X or a Xeon chip I can't remember + 980M SLI.

That's actually sick. But also thick enough to break your back. Is that thing like 15 pounds?

Wait. Isn't the new 1080 MXM not compatible with last gen Clevo P870DM

*shrugs*. It's a portable-server type.

As for the 1080, I suspect one might work in last gen, but not two. Unless we find two 1080s with SLI connectors from maybe MSI and shove them in, but then it's if the heatsinks would work, etc.

OriginPC laptops are Clevos, for the most part. I don't know if they any have non-clevo rebrands, though. But basically yeah, they're Clevos. Don't bother buying from them though. They're as expensive as, or more expensive than, Prema partner clevo rebrander shops like Mythlogic or HIDevolution.

i read the mythlogic sites and some reviews, but they had some bios issues and the site... i'll be honest. it looks shady as hell. Origin PC looks like my only viable option...

what do you think? 980 (Desktop grade) and desktop i5 for 15000 hkd (or around 1950 usd)

or what about acer predator 15? its around 350 dollars cheaper, but the cpu is a 6700hq and everything is soldered onto the motherboard. But i can always add an egpu box if necessary. but that cpu...

I am currently using a mythlogic machine, so if you don't care for it that's really up to you. But Mythlogic or HIDevolution is the way. Just don't go with OriginPC, you'll literally be paying more for a more locked down machine. Honestly.

And wait for the Pascal machines to come out. Do NOT buy a maxwell machine right now. They'll be here in a week or two at max.

Are mythlogic rigs good? I would buy it if it's good. But pascal is more expensive compared to maxwell. I wonder what will the mythlogic deimos will cost if I make it pascal. Also, where can i buy clevo upgrades?

You can buy them from HIDevolution, mythlogic, Eurocom, or RJTech.

Mythlogic use Clevos. Spec for spec, OriginPC/Sager/HIDevolution's EVOC series/Eurocom/Mythlogic/etc will have the same specs, same cooling, etc.

The benefit of Mythlogic and Eurocom and HIDevolution is that they are partnered with a system BIOS and video BIOS modder called Prema, and use his sBIOSes and vBIOSes. They offer more system control and better stability. As far as the 980, you could get a 1070 for less than a 980 currently costs and it'll perform better.

Do NOT buy a Deimos until the Pascal machines come out. Take my word for it.

Its more like if you know what you're doing, don't buy the core. I don't feel like the release of Akitio will change much in the landscape. Everyone who knows what there doing would have never bought a core and waited for cheaper alternatives such as the Akitio. However, something like the Akitio would require aftermarket modding to get it to work with a graphics card due to the lack of a built in PSU and half length chassis. People who don't know how to mod stuff would have to buy the core regardless. Furthermore the chassis only provides 25W of power and doesn't have more robust features that will be okay with drawing more voltage like most motherboards. This would limit your card selection to one's that already have additional 6 pins built into the PCB. Something like the 6-pin RX480 will fuck up this chassis. Beyond this there are numerous driver and software issues that need to be resolved as everyone who's jury rigging a Razer Core to their TB3 laptops/motherboards right now do it with Razer's software and Akitio doesn't provide this. If you really want to attempt something like this I'd suggested Tech Inferno forums because their the masters of DIY eGPUs.

If you're not in a rush since you say you won't be going till next year, just wait it out a bit to see how the Thunderbolt 3 market shapes out. Things will hopefully get cheaper and there may be some sweet deals during Cyber Monday and Black Friday.

AKiTiO has an eGPU coming out, planned Q4 this year. Will be affordable!

But if you are in a rush, I would suggest taking @D2ultima's advice and go for a Clevo. I have a Razer Blade Stealth and it just has way too many issues that I simply just stick with my MacBook Pro now, playing games through a Windows EFI. When I can afford a new laptop, Clevo is at the top of my list or until the new MBPs with TB3 come out.

Even then, be a little patient. There's a lot of cool new tech coming out. Modular technology is the big thing coming up now, so I'm sure companies in the industry are building cool stuff that might be really affordable, and worth the money and the wait in the long run.
