Help me to pick a laptop?

Go to solution Solved by RadeonHD7350(best gpu),

nvm... lol

any good upgradeable laptops atm? with cheap upgrades

Hi! I am going to US for one year next year, so I will need a laptop. I will buy razer core with the laptop so i can put my 970 inside.
DO you have any recommendations?
I want my new laptop to have a fast processor. I5 skylake should be the bare minimum. I want emm... longevity you know? Graphics card doesn't matter. I will be using razer core anyways. As long as it isn't sh!tty integrated graphics it will be fine. But i mean sh!tty integrated graphics. Some new integrated graphics chips are decent enough for casual gaming. Those are fine.
And the last thing I want is a flashy appearance. I want the laptop to have a backlit keyboard and it should look nerdy and gamer-ish. Razer and alienware fits the bill perfectly
Price doesn't matter. As long as it stays under the $1000 mark. I can stretch the budget for up to $100. but i'd prefer it to stay under $1000 because i am going to buy the razer core. speaking of razer core, do you guys know any other egpu solutions that is cheaper (and more portable) than razer core?

I am interested in these models:

msi cx62 6qd

razer blade stealth

acer aspire series with 940m

alienware 13

I5 4460 | H97m Anniversary | 16gb | GTX 970 | thermaltake versa n21 case  | Seagate 1tb hdd | Thermaltake PSU
Mouse | I had a few gray hamsters, they died a few years ago. They were Bobo, Seed and Seed 2.0.
Keyboard | scrabble
OS | MachromindowsteamuxOS

nope, works with every other laptop. But razer CLAIMS it works better with razer's own laptop

good luck man. everything you listed will bottleneck the 970 you plan to put in. not to mention the razor core is like 500 dollars. At 1500 dollars you're getting close to a 980m laptop, which performs similarly to a 970. food for thought. I actually don't know a laptop with a quad core and tb3 under 1000. Secondly I believe literally half the laptops you wrote that you're interested in don't support Tb3. like the msi cx, it has a usc-c, but no tb3. that is the only thing with a quad core. everything else has shitty ulv duo-core chips.

alienware 13

The Razer core is horribly priced. The Core + a 480/1060 (970 is shit value now and won't last as long with 3.5GB of VRAM) is close to 800$. I'd say look at a gaming laptop for 1800$ - it will perform better, have better build quality and be more portable.

The laptops

MSI CX62 is old and crappy. Doesn't support the Core
Razer Blade Stealth - CPU is weak and bottlenecks anything beyond a 960 (2 cores locked at 15W - extremely weak). It also runs hot and loud due to the thinness.
Acer - overheating. Simple. No Core support
Alienware 13 - no Core support, decent cooling, supports the Amp (Alienware eGPU).

Only Razer laptops officially support the Core and both run hot, loud and have shit keyboards. Not worth the investment.

i'm looking for... longevity. and i can afford $1500. max. im getting the razer core so i can upgrade. you know what i mean? Alot of laptops have stuff soldered onto the motherboard. say, i buy a laptop with 980m, as 1080 came out, the 980 will be outdated in what. 2 years? and i will have to spend another $1800. but with the razer core, i don't have to spend that much in the long run. you get what i mean? i mean, cpus won't be outdated as fast as gpus. especially for fps gamers like me.

MSI made upgradeable laptops, but they are like $1600+. idk if it is worth the price.

edit: never mind, its $23--

You can just buy a Clevo rebrand with MXM support? The GPUs AND CPUs can be upgraded on those. Look at Sager/OriginPC/Mythologic/Eurocom/Turbo X or whatever your local reseller is. Only the Blade and Blade Stealth support the core at the moment and both run extremely hot and loud due to the overly thin chassis. The Blade Stealth can only support a 960 or lower as the CPU is piss poor in terms of horse power and the Blade 14 overheats.

These's about a 10-20% drop in performance using the core on a 6700HQ from a 6700k stock. Clevo's upgradable laptops start with the P750DM in the current gen. That comes with a 980m. For the next gen don't expect a 1080 in that. At most you'll have a 1070 and at worst a 1060. Both are still upgrades to a 980m. Also, if you're getting upgradable laptops you'll want that Prema Bios.

Either you stretch it to $1500 and get the MSI GS60 Ghost Pro or get the Acer Aspire V Nitro Black Edition. Both have thunderbolt 3 and should support any eGPU, tho I would suggest you wait before you buy the razer core. Gigabyte, PowerColor and Akitio announced their egpu enclosures recently and should be cheaper than the Razer Core.

The V Nitro overheats so that's not really a good option

problem. mxm upgrade kits cost WAY MORE in the long run. a M chip costs twice as much as their bigger brothers. So i think using egpu costs less and have stronger processing power.

632 dollars for a 970m. and a desktop 970 is like, 400 dollars. is it worth the price? you tell me.

No. The core currently only works with Razer laptops via TB3

not sure about the Razer core but this should assist you on finding the laptop with TB3 on your price range. Just remember dual core will be a bottleneck.

The core is 2 times the size of a normal GPU in every dimension. It's also heavy (due to the 500W SFF PSU). It's not portable, that is certain.

It's larger than a suitcase... It's close to the size of an mITX PC.
